Crows are ubiquitous where people live, and they are damn smart.

They could be trained to pick up various kinds of litter and deposit it in special trash cans which use AI on the image to classify it as say, "cigarette butt" (gets a reward) or "leaf" (no reward).

So with a kind of cooperation between computers and crows, we could live in completely litter free areas, at least up to the weight a crow can carry.

Yeah, I've read about that experiment: the guy taught crows to pick up lost coins in exchange for nuts. The idea was to eventually move on to cigarette butts but exchanging nuts for cigarette butts turned out not as economical as going for coins.

I didn't know about the experiment.

Maybe it could be economical now with computer vision and AI.

brilliant idea that I think is worth more tries. Maybe instead of food we get them hooked on cheap bathtub meth?

They might work a lot faster too, until they drop dead.

Maybe we could train the vast number of people getting "free stuff" to do these kinds of tasks. Surely these people are more trainable than crows. ... I hope.

I like the innovation. However would it not be easier to just train the humans to put shit in the garbage can and not on the ground? The penalty for your third offense could be you have to go to work for a whole day picking up litter, while wearing shirt and pants made up of dirty diapers and Burger King wrappers.

Those are the people doing the littering.

Singapore can show us what they do to people who drop cigarette butts or gum on the sidewalk.

Neat idea.

They aren't, that's why they get free stuff.

I think they only know how to fuck and make more people who get "free stuff". It's the only required skill.

Not a joke. If you litter you should be shot on site. There are garbage cans everywhere. There's zero excuse besides that person being a human piece of shit. Pick up after yourself you fuck ass.

I've chased and chewed people out for throwing shit out their car window. Not the smartest as I have no clue if they have a gun, but it's absolute bull shit. There's no reason to litter. None.

No, they are already trained to get free stuff so there is no incentive to be trained for anything else.

The picture you selected for this thread Pat...

Well out of the corner of my eye when I'm scanning the posts. It keeps reminding me of turtle dove.

Yes, kinda sad. I wonder if her husband was ever convicted. His name is Scott Sills, MD. Anyone know how to look up the result of the trial?

If you know the county the court's website should have the info on the trial.

I did earlier this year and it just looked like procedural bull shit to this point. Discovery or whatever type nonsense. These can take time, especially in the covid era. My SIL has some legal issues and a lot of stuff is getting delayed and pushed back due to quantities of people in court rooms, social distancing, etc. She was looking at about 3 years behind bars, but she's going to get time served right now under house arrest. Low level criminals and crimes are easy now. They won't send you to jail.

Back to crows. I was trying to get them to come to our house to try to train them, so I put some peanuts up on a little platform on a stick, out of the reach of squirrels.

Unfortunately, just after I did that, a crow was killed by a car on the street in front of our house. Some others saw me take up the body in a shovel, and then I buried it in the back, out of sight.

For a few days, some crows hung out on the phone lines in front of the house, calling for the dead one, but finally gave up and now just don't come down our street at all. Never a crow in sight here anymore. It's pretty amazing, like they can speak to each other.

I bet a dung beetle service would make a good start up.

They do have an ESP flock wavelength, as do many animals.

In the spring, they flock swarm once or twice all over our place in Santa Cruz, like the movie "The Birds", but they just make noise then move on. I can watch them through the skylight.

I honestly don't understand how massive flocks of birds can all move in sync unless there is some signal they are all following.
