Lol, that's great! Never occurred to me that someone would register just to be able to ignore another user.

And thank you for stealing memes! They are meant to be stolen.

There was one guy I really wanted to /ignore though so I signed up.

Let me guess. That was me.

Maybe women are put off by the tits thread, or the argumentative nature of the site.

I suppose I cannot know about the effects of the cheesecake thread, but I am going to say it's not because of the "argumentative nature".

I have been observing and participating with this site since the real estate focused days. I say this place has done a really good job. Interactions are mostly, relatively, constructive (and not uncommonly informative, funny and entertaining). I do not remember this site ever devolving into endless, insufferable flaming, from barely literate troglodytes, for example.

Tell me where a person can find better.

@Kep Thank you!

Let me know if you see a way I can get the site more visibility.

I'd be interested to know how long the PatNet members lurked before registering (try before you buy period). I'll start - I think it was close to 10 years. @Patrick you might be able to confirm this, but probably not, since I've had a major geographic change in the last 20 years - You'd have to have a really long IP history cached.
39   WookieMan   2024 Sep 29, 4:40am

I lurked for 5 years. Joined and didn't make a comment for about 3 years. 13k+ comments and 9 ignores later.

I miss some of the older petty users that always wanted to argue, but when found wrong they cut and run. Have had two long timers recently do it. Just own what you type here. If you're wrong you're wrong. It's not the end of the world. Just don't dox yourself is my biggest suggestion and second is don't get butt hurt. Sometimes it's best to ignore a post.

It's not a bad thing, but some users you're never going to convince or convert here even if you're 100% right.

@stereotomy I don't keep very old log files, so I don't have any way of telling how long people lurk. I supposed I could keep records of all the old IP addresses, but it doesn't seem worthwhile.

I was able to tell how long people go between registering and making their first comment, because the database has registration date and all the comments have a date. 84% of users make their first comment on the day of registration. The longest lag between registering and commenting was 4117 days, which is over eleven years.

For those that took a day or more, here is a log-log graph:

42   ElYorsh   2024 Sep 29, 11:13am

I lurked around since Obama's real estate crash and started to value the quality and substance of some of the commentators. I think I finally registered when my brain disconnected from the MSM matrix during the Trump years.
43   SoTex   2024 Sep 29, 12:04pm

I lurked for a few years starting in 2007 and then joined one day when my toilet broke.

Likely the TD exposure. The site was mentioned multiple times on the show. Not sure what network, but you'll still get 500k to 1M viewers on those crime shows. That's a ton of hits. No one watches in real time anymore so you'll have residual users for years.
