NEWS: It appears the crippled Boeing Starliner, which has marooned two astronauts up in space for almost two months, may have completely failed.

It's now highly likely the stranded astronauts will end up leaving the International Space Station on a SpaceX Dragon spacecraft.

In 2014 NASA awarded contracts to two companies to build spacecraft capable of bringing astronauts and cargo to the International Space Station.

SpaceX received $2.6 billion, launched first mission in 2020 and has done 13 crew missions with 49 astronauts so far.

Boeing received $4.2 billion, first mission 2024 and stranded at the space station with leaks. Likely a total loss and the astronauts will be need to be rescued by SpaceX. Even worse, the software on Starliner cannot handle an automated undocking, possibly resulting in Starliner being permanently blocking one of two ports needed for other capsules to arrive.

Boeing, twice the budget and time, and the outsourced code can't handle an undocking.

I remember peeps on PatNet insisting that EULA was fucking toast because of SpaceX.

I also remember laughing at them.

I've defended Boeing. They had no business being in space. The engineering, production, sales of commercial airlines is insane. Then decide let's go straight up into global orbit, completely the opposite of what they do.

Musk has the entire world outclassed with space. It's not even close. Competition is good. But countries can't even compete with SpaceX. Musk couldn't compete with Boeing in commercial airlines at all. Gotta stay in your lane. It took forever for him to get cars right, but I feel like he's passed the leadership on that one down. His bet is on space at this point. He'll make more money with larger payloads than anyone can compete with on the planet.

Space development requires the best of the best. If it's a black man, fine, etc. But space is hard and cruel, and no number of "Cumbaya" chants can change that. Incompetence - people die.

Apollo 13 - spergs were in their element. Acknowledge reality, and reap the benefits - it's not about racial diversity, but neurodiversity. The spergs worked for 48 hours straight to get the alpha astronauts home.

Musk understands this - the spergs have their place. For them, it's easier to engineer a rocket to successfully fly to mars to figure out how to get laid.

I defend Boeing here, but they have no business with space. They did it to get grants and $$$$. Focus on planes you've built for 50 years. Musk is obviously kicking their ass in space. Beat Airbus. Your only competitor outside of military aviation.

Musk is a freak or extremely good at hiring people. It's difficult to run one company well. I think his greatest skill is listening and then downloading it to his spectrum brain. You don't run an auto manufacturer and then beat EVERY country combined in outer space without being autistic. Something is off with the dude, but he's at least doing it for good even though I hate EV's.

Build commercial airplanes. Dabble in military. Stop with vertical flight to space. Not your game.

Boeing gets rid of diversity department

The plane maker’s DEI staff have reportedly been reassigned to new positions amid a major workforce overhaul

Boeing has reportedly dismantled its Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) department and the vice president in charge has resigned, as the struggling company moves forward with a major restructuring, Bloomberg reported on Thursday.

DEI refers to measures aimed at ensuring equal representation for people of every race, gender, or disability status.

What about ability status rather than disability status?

If it were really dismantled, they would have been fired. It's not like these people have talents that make them useful elsewhere, unless you are looking for a janitor.

I would too. Just wouldn't meet my needs and I'd have to insure a 2nd car for just myself. So still not really worth it even free even though it would be fun. They (anyone) have to build bigger EV cars with longer range and tow capacity. They're no where near that without costs going up to $200k and your electric bill goes from $150/mo to 400/mo.

They're giving them away in the Golden State. PG&E has a program where you can get a $4,000 rebate on a used EV if you meet income limits. For example, if your income is less than $156k in San Mateo County (family of 4), you would qualify. Additionally, if you buy from a dealer, you can get a 30% federal tax credit. I have seen several older model Nissan Leafs that are capable of 40 mile round trips with at least 30% battery capacity to spare.

I just don't care. My family wouldn't qualify for any of it anyway if I lived in CA. You can't live there on that income. If you do that's your choice. I'll take a $1,300 mortgage for what would be $5k+ in rent or mortgage in CA. I can deal with winter. Just fly to Mexico or the Caribbean. Easy and the flights are free beside fees anyone would have to pay either way.

I could fly down to Mexico after the election as a Trump celebration trip for $1k all in as a solo traveler.
