Last night on ABC nightly news, they ran a peice on how Automobile accidents are up over 15% in the last few years. Now of course we ALL know it's because the smart phones are cheaper than a menu item at McDonalds and every one now has one. Also the car consoles all have a single touch screen, that requires your undivided attention as you scroll through menu items. Where as before the people subconsciously got to know the nomenclature of where the dials, buttons and levers were on their car, and could adjust temps, radio, fan speed, and other things with out even taking their eyes off the road.

But that was not where ABC was taking this fluff advertorial.

They claimed that collisions and deaths are up, because cars are outdated, and old. And thanks to the rebounding economy and cheap gas more people are on the road(I swear to GOD this is what they said.).
The solution a new Volvo that has all of the new safety features, like rear cameras, wake up seats for drowsy drivers, and hands free controls, for radio, air con ect...

Hey everyone buy a $60,000 car, it will solve all of the road safety problems, but keep facebooking on the "I" while going 60mph.

Walmart can go frak themselves. They are "THE" worst retailer out there.

A lot of poor people buy food there and life staples. Also, because they are so big, they have pushed out local stores which couldn't compete on price. So when Walmart starts to fail and have trouble, poor people need to either drive far with $4-$5 gas to get to another outlet, or deal with Walmart rising prices.

The US government has granted walmart exemptions from various costly laws making it even harder for mom and pop to compete.

What has happened is the collusion between government and big business has set the path we are on, and poor and middle class will have huge issues to deal with.

I think cheering on the death of walmart might have some fairly radical impact to the quality of life of the poorer classes, and deliverable and unwinding oligarchical collectivist empires will have consequences. Its not black and white. You cant "hate" walmart when they are a supply chain, a general store, for the disaffected.

If I buy a car, it drives until it dies. The consumption models in this country are out of whack. I find new car prices to be radically expensive and most would think Im well compensated.

Waiting for a 7 seat prius or a diesel based sienna. (The Prius V in EU and JP are 7 seat capable with a different battery pack )

But yes, the propaganda press of the oligarchical collectivist police state is telling the lemmings to consume. Recklessly.

My Mazda CX-9 is a death trap. It's a nice looking car and drives smoother than a Cadillac but the side frame of the front windshield is about 5 inches thick and the angle that it cuts across the field of view. The frame overlays the intersecting road perfectly. It obfuscates about 50 feet of some intersections. On numerous occasions passengers in the car stopped me from getting T-Boned as I started through an intersection and a car was right there just 10 to 20 feet away. You really have to turtle neck and look around before you cross streets.

I doubt safety is even considered in design features anymore. Hey as long it's got airbags and on star we're good!

So funny the bad sales are affecting their supply chain to where you see empty shelves. That just implies their shoppers just buy basics and not luxuries. This paints a recession...I mean they have the best inventory turn over and logistics chain than any company and yet their sales are hurting them badly..

The last two people that have hit my car were both early 20-somethings that were diddling their phones and sliding through a stop sign or not braking in time.

I use a 30 year old car for my daily driver. It's in very nice shape (thanks to all the people that have hit me and gotten most of my car repainted as a result) and the insurance is $22/month. Ironically, I could afford a new car, but the money you lose in first 2 years' depreciation, finance costs, and how high the insurance is on a new car--I would rather save all that.

This is not talked about enough. Our touch screen world has made it impossible to be responsible multitaskers, which is a disservice in today's far more fast paced society.

I guess the next step is brain chip implants and ESP wireless control.

I've hated this in newer cars for years! My next to last car was an '04 VW New Beetle TDI with head restraints that blocked my vision in every direction. I pulled them out of their slots and put them in the trunk while I owned it. I traded it in on a brand new '07 Altima 3.5 SE at the end of '06 which I loved, but you couldn't remove the head restraints. I had to lower the right front seat back below the window sill to see out. Last summer when it had only 19,500 miles on it, I decided to sell it to a new car dealer which gave me $14,500 for it. I bought a '75 Pontiac Grand Ville convertible with only 62K on it for half that price and have an old '98 Buick Le Sabre I drive around town. If I need to take an out-of-town trip, I rent a car for the time I need it. I got tired of bells and chimes and buzzers and blinking lights all the time.

I rented a 2013 Ford Focus late last year for three days and I found out if I got over the speed limit wherever I was, a bell would ring and a message would appear that said "Drive Safely - Observe All Speed Laws"! There is a section on I-35 now from Hillsboro to the Ellis County line where the speed limit is 75--when I got to that speed, a message appeared that said "Vehicle is Approaching its Maximum Speed". I asked the lady at Enterprise about it and she said all Fords are being designed not to go over 80 and the cars today know what the speed limit is whever you are. When I needed to rent another one on New Year's weekend, I specifically asked for a non-Ford product! The idea!

The 2% pay cut to most working families due to the payroll tax raise is percentage-wise exactly the same as the Sequester Monster's 2% cut into the federal budget. I wonder why the bureaucrats are not taking a 2% salary cut each, and be done with it.
