I believe Coca Cola was probably a better product when it was in it. It got caught up in the medical grade refined Cocaine Doctors were handing out like candy around that time, and like all good knee jerks. Was pulled from the product. Coca leaves are not strong or potent. Lots of them have to be mashed and refined with a distillate and processed to be a drug.
Out of all we know about Coke used to be in Cola, I have never heard one single report that people were hooked to it, like they were to the opium and cocaine pure grade elixirs the snake oil salesmen sold to bored housewives.

South American farm laborers chew on the coca leaves to extract the stimulant and avoid fatigue when working on the fields. It gives them a lot of teeth stains but they don't get hooked.
