Hi all,

I have been on this site for 7+ years and like many of you I have benefited from listening to the cleaver people on this site and not rush into buying our first home. My wife and I wanted to buy since 2003. We have two kids (1 and 3) and we were insecure of buying in the bay area but also sick of not having a place to call home. I have realized that the good times of "making money" with real estate are gone for a long while. However, I am a handy person and I always wanted to work on my home to make it better for our family. We purchased our first home in Mill Valley last January after years of saving for a 25% downpayment. Although this may not turn out to be a wise financial investment and can guaranty that for us, it has been a great investment for our hapiness. We needed a safe place and peace of mind for the kids' education. We haver re-done the kitchen and other things already. After a vacation out of the country I can now say that we are coming back HOME. Everything that is said on this site is true. Construction permit are very expensive and your taxes will go up. I simply wanted to give the other side of the coin that owning a home is more for some people (like us) that a financial decision. We accepted the fact that we are paying a premium to own. We will probably not make money out of this but having a safe and personalized nest for the family is priceless...

I feel happy for you.

When we bought, we bought for almost the same reasons. Over the years we ve made extra payments and built a sizeable equity in our home. Knowing myself and my wife with our habits it was very hard for us to save. Any liquid assets would be spent on something or the other. Having a home made us more stable financially. It may sound very counter intuitive to a lot of people but you should listen to everyone and act and do whatever you think is right.

Awesome reflection on the difficult buying decision. You can't put a price tag on having a happy family. Hope it continues to improve your family and you enjoy the asset for years and years. I wish more people bought for this reason.
