Adult Kids at Home

Any thoughts on encouraging my college age and 24 yr old kids to stay at home, pay rent/pool resources with us (and save for themselves) for an extended period of time? We have the room.
I am a bit of a doom and gloomer.
My husband is opposed. He wants them out asap after college and providing for themselves.
I am not sure. That sounds good, but good FT jobs (even in my area, Wash DC) are not easy to come by.
Lots of other cultures do it.
Not sure if it would work or if we might kill each other.
Thanks

Meh, whatever works for you.

I know some young newlyweds "out on their own".

Young dad has a decent full-time job, they have a new baby. I met them recently, you think they'd be on the road to independence right? No. The girl's dad is over there all the time fixing their cars or whatever else needs fixing, providing free babysitting, etc. etc. Young dad sees no problem with calling on his FIL to change a light bulb or whatever damn thing comes up, instead of manning up and doing it himself. The young father instead of saving for their joint future talks about spending his next check to buy a fishing boat. The girl blabbed about thinking about quitting school and being a stay at home mom, despite the fact that this would bring the bill due immediately for the student loans on the degree she would be ditching half-done.

Quite frankly the whole American mythos about moving out on your own and turning immediately into successful and thrifty grownups is a crock. You can learn and do all those things entirely independently of where you reside.

Rents in the DC area are outrageous, and yes they should stay at home until they have saved up enough money to pay cash for a house. Tell your husband that you 2 can keep track of the kids schedule so you will know when it's OK to walk around the house naked (or ask the kid to phone in when they are about to come home so that you have enough time to get dressed). Part of what you signed up for when you had kids was the fact that in this economy they are likely to live with you until they turn about 40 or so.
