Buddhism let us remind ourselves, takes pride in its rational nature.
Not like those "silly theistic religions."
I recently dropped back in to www.dharmawheel.net/ after an absence of some months,.. to discover threads on how to rid your home of angry giant-spirits...see " Evicting an Asura ".
On a discussion of a photograph showing a moribund pigeon which assures us all that the pigeon went to heaven, so thats alright.. and carries a post from a Buddhist saying that he can see various non physical realms but has not yet learned to see the Buddhas "Pure Land ".... clearly more work is needed there....see " Bird Pays Homage To Amitabha ".
And a thread concerned with spirit guides in Buddhism which takes as its starting position the obvious and given fact that such spirit guides exist, but sparks a lively debate about how to tell the reliable ones from the reliable...
So important don't you think ? Nothing more annoying than a bullshitting spirit guide.
see " Buddhism About Spirit Guides..."

Yeah, rational my ass. Thanks for this ODham, that site is a hoot, shows that Buddhism is just like the Monotheistic religions, people fighting over unprovable assertions of woo.

2   Patrick   @   2012 Aug 29, 1:48am

There are more different sects of Buddhism than of Christianity. They vary from the hyper-rational to the woo-woo sprits and levitation stuff.

3   ODham   @   2012 Aug 29, 2:00am

Very true Patrick. For some reason the woos seem to dominate the Buddhist Internet. On the forum I have posted a link to, non-woos are ganged up on...

That's true Patrick, but Zen Buddhism (from whence Golden Mountain Buddhism derives largely) is a minority sect. The majority of Buddhist sects proffer a great deal of supernatural belief. The number of writings on demonology in Buddhism dwarf those produced by the Catholic church, for example.

Just like there are very liberal and rational Priests and laity in the Catholic Church, it's much more common for most Priests and adherents in Global Catholicism to believe in the power of Shrines and Icons. Buddhism is the same way.

One chap left recently when he was verbally lynched for doubting the literal existence of spirits. One of the lynch mob solemnly assured the congregation/membership that the spirits he frequently encountered in the English countryside all spoke Tibetan.
Point being its just another religion at heart.
Albeit one which has a lot of techniques which isolated from their superstitious context could be useful in promoting calmness and relaxation.

In America we have the right to believe in whatever woo-woo you choo-choose! The point at which the law steps in is where your religion causes you to break the law and thus impinge on the rights of others. It's called tolerance, and it's a pretty radical idea. It's virtually unknown in Moslem countries where you can and will be lynched for daring to 1) speak against Islam, 2) do something the local imam has forbidden (dance anyone?),3) convert from Islam to another religion (apostasy, punishable by death!), or disrespect a book of lies.

7   ODham   @   2012 Aug 29, 4:47am

That there is a choice is certainly true Quigley.

Yep, and I have the right to call it hookum.

Of course, this tolerance shit is all brand new.

In Colonial Maryland, Jews were banned from office, but Catholics were allowed - in Colonial New York (New Amsterdam) it was the opposite - Jews could hold office but not Catholics!

Not much more than 200 years ago (and often thereafter), and for most of the domination of the Zombie Carpenter's religion, disagreeing with authorities meant burning at the stake - often on the most minor theological disagreements. See Thomas More, Thomas Beckett, Hugh Latimore, Torquemada, Anne Hutchinson, Servetus, Spinoza (both by Jews AND Calvinists), and those are just off the top of my head. Lutheran, Catholic, Calvinist, Jewish, Baptist, Congregationalist, you name 'em, they crushed free speech.

And within religions there is plenty of oppression - look at the history of the Jesuits, for one.

9   ODham   @   2012 Aug 29, 7:13am

And of course the recent crop of western kids who have been declared to be " tulkus" ( reincarnations of lamas ) and who are taken from their families for " training " have little choice. Although some are now hitting their teens and twenties and kicking over the traces.

10   ODham   @   2012 Aug 29, 8:12pm

One who had no choice was Osel Hita Torres, a Spanish boy recognized by the Dalai Lama as the reincarnation of a previous Tibetan Lama He became the most well known of the western "reincarnations" as a result of a best selling book " Reincarnation; The Boy Lama " by Vicky McKenzie.
He was taken from his family home and raised in what he himself described as " medieval " conditions, he has spoken eloquently of his suffering as a child as a result of this form of abduction.
On reaching adulthood he disrobed.
He wants be a film maker.
I wish him well.

Another wonderful thread on www.dharmawheel.net/ called "Will Buddhism Become Redundant " A " Global Moderator "..ooh er...has just stated that science has reached its limit of usefulness..there is apparently no more to be discovered.
I believe I have come across that POV before..wasn't it commonly held in about 1500 C.E. ?

wow Buddhism sounds great!

perhaps we should follow the Buddhist model that has produced such paradises as China?

Lap it up like a dog laps up a puddle of anti-freeze on the driveway. Thanks for reading.

oh LORD I how loathe these fucking sanctimonious RETARDS who think their LIMITED UNDERSTANDING of Buddhism is some kind of credible hallmark of spirituality and 'higher-mindedness'. Makes me want to mow down the entire parking lot party at a grateful dead concert with A FUCKING AK-47! That'll be 300 50-something dentists, tax attorneys, and nose-and-throat specialists that this fucking American WILL NOT MISS.

I dont hate Christianity...and I would think it is obvious that imo Buddhism is largely a big pack of fluffy nonsense enclosing a small useful core of relaxation techniques. But feel free to vent.
