http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2012-11-02/marathoners-wonder-whether-storm-battered-new-yorkers-will-cheer.html

"Toni Chaplin-Armer, an executive assistant for University of Cumbria Vice Chancellor Peter Strike in Carlisle, England, spent about $3,500 and arrived in New York on Nov. 1 eager to run the race for the first time.

“I’m angry,” Chaplin-Armer, 48, said in a telephone interview after learning of the cancellation. “To cancel at this late stage, it has a negative effect for people that came from outside New York. I can appreciate how the locals feel, but I don’t appreciate the fact that I flew all the way out here and then this happened.”

Wow... I feel sorry for her... she's out $3,500. I mean it, I do. Her vacation is ruined too. But it pales in comparison to the damage faced by the citizens of NYC. The marathon was cancelled due to a natural disaster, not because the City failed. So, while it's unforunate that this woman is out $$$, I think she should shut the hell up and deal with it. NYC didn't conjure up a hurricane just to mess with her.

New York Road Runners, which organizes the race, said yesterday in a statement. We cannot allow a controversy over an athletic event -- even one as meaningful as this -- to distract attention away from all the critically important work being done to recover from the storm. The marathon has become a part of autumn in New York, a day when the city turns out to cheer the best runners in the world as well as joggers lucky enough to gain entry. It was run weeks after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, even as crews worked to find human...

Yeah, but he should have called i off much much sooner and not say it's going to happen one week and then cancel next week. Bloomberg screwed up royally.

Actually I think the Mayor was right to want to go ahead with the marathon. Reportedly the complaints from Staten Island made him reverse himself. Cancelling a marathon doesn't help anyone, if anything it actually makes the situation worse.

They can rename it the "Rubble Run" marathon.

Bloomberg was a total Ass for even entertaining the Idea of continuing on with the Marathon. I mean it's not like he's in South Florida being fed misinformation about the severity of the Storm. He's right there in the thick of it. Though if I'm calling shenanigans, I would have to call it on the Democrat party as a whole. Bloomberg was calling "The Show must go On" in tandem with Obama touring New Jersey. Classless jerks.

One thing Obama got right, the Liberals are more Transparent, you can see right through them. They are so transparent I can see Nancy Pelosi's special place, where she keeps her huge set of balls.

yeah, it doesn't help anyone, except all the emergency personnel that has to drive an extra 5 miles to get to their destination because the roads are closed.

Typical sociopath that thinks the world should revolve around her. Doesn't surprise me. This storm has brought out the best in people and also the worst in people. While some have lost their homes, others are whining that they cant charge their ipads. Only a true jerk off would offer a quote like that up for the whole world to read.

Typical sociopath...whining....

Somebody fell out of the wrong side of bed this morning, i.e. the sarcastic and armchair diagnostic side. In all the years of the NYC marathon, I've never seen a report of it disrupting emergency services. The stated reasons for cancelling seem mainly electoral, i.e. protests from Staten Island. The PBA made a fair point that some of the police officers would rather be helping their families instead of collecting overtime managing the crowd, but nobody suggested any issue of life safety. The shortage of hotel rooms is a significant issue but could have been resolved by relocating people to commuter towns, e.g. Stamford has a lot of hotel capacity. NYC handles big events all the time, and they're good at it. If they needed to cancel because of logistics, they should have done that sooner, but apparently it was only because of controversy.

Funny thing about South Florida a major storm aftermath is the only time South Floridians become civilized. People are openly called out that do stupid stuff like show up for relief supplies(food, water, funds) when they live well in the comfort zone 10-20 miles away. Neighbors will actually rat them out. Traffic lights are out, yet people exhibit proper 4 way stop etiquette, than they do normally at actual 4 way stops.
