This compromise is worse than going off the cliff. At least with the cliff, tax breaks for the uber-wealthy would expire and wasteful military spending would be cut. That's worth more than any negative effect of the cliff.
That's what government wanted to avoid. Their definition of the fiscal cliff is their wealthy donors have to start paying taxes, and their military contractors not getting as many contracts as they wish.

The job chart uses government figures, which quite frankly understate the real unemployment.
As for the video on the fiscal cliff compromise, the president caved in on letting the ultra-rich keep the Bush tax cuts forever. No surprise. This is the one and only thing the republicans really wanted. They don't care about the debt or the deficit; those are just bargaining chips to keep the wealthy paying less tax than the middle class.
