"A gaffe is when a politician tells the truth - some obvious truth he isn't supposed to say." - Michael Kinsley
If many people on both sides of the aisle hate the guy, then that is usually a pick I like. Not an Obama fan by any stretch but I can appreciate this move. The republicans are flat out mad that he went against them. Part of this is an FU to Netanyahu and Israel for interfering in US politics. Part of this is hopefully a real commitment to start paring down the military. Despite some of his negative points, I think the positives outweigh the negatives.
Obama's MO seems to be picking off the Republicans he can work with, leaving what's left in that party to careen ever more rightward in opposition.
If BO could have 5 terms of this like FDR/Truman, in 2028 the GOP would look exactly like Alex Jones clones, gone so far right they're some weird quasi-left bullshit.

From NPR...
Chuck Hagel opposed Bush's entry into the Iraq War, and it turns out that Hagel was right to do so. Hagel is a constant reminder to Republicans about their failure to oppose a bad war fought for bad reasons and based on what everyone now knows to be blatant lies from the Bush administration.
In Washington, being right when everyone else is wrong is the worst sin you can make.
