Well, we need to distinguish religious intolerance from civic intolerance. One can be civic tolerant yet religious intolerant: that's what we see in the west; this situation also tells us that religious intolerance does not entail civic intolerance (like terrorism, modern crusades, beheadings during the reformation era, etc).

If there was such thing as conservatism scale, I would rank right wing american christian conservatives at 6.5 and muslims at 9.5 (on a scale of 1 to 10).

6.5 and 9.5 being the number of feet they make their women walk behind them? :)

I think religion can be political, cultural or spiritual. Using any of these metrics, American conservatives and Muslims have more overlap in a Venn diagram than Muslims and liberals, right?
Do you think Islam today is conservative or liberal?
Islam is clearly right-wing conservatism. The more "radical" or "fundamentalist", the more right-wing it is. Just think about what the Christian right and the Islamic right have in common...
1. They hate the separation of church and state.
2. They think their religion is the absolute truth and every other religion is heresy.
3. They hate homosexuals.
4. They hate Jews. (The Christian right only wants Israel to exist so that the Jews can be used as cannon fodder to bring the rapture and the return of Jesus sooner.)
5. They hate science.
6. They don't like liberated women.
7. They have immense sexual hangups about pre-marital sex, but they can't seem to succeed at monogamy either.
8. They love guns and preach the most hateful parts of their religion, ignoring all the parts that promote pacifism, which they consider a dirty word.
9. They have no problem with assassination of political opponents. They think by killing a man, they can kill an idea.
10. They do all their evil in the name of god, morality, and family values.
11. They are willing do wage endless wars for their tribe, but are unwilling to volunteer at a homeless shelter to help their less fortunate neighbors.
12. They look down on rationality, reasoning, objectivity, and intellectualism.
13. They glorify violence sacrifices.
14. God is always on their side and the other side is always evil.
15. They motherfucking hate atheists.
Islam is clearly right-wing conservatism.
You'd think they'd embrace them more, if only for electoral viability!
On a value scale for humanity of 1-10, 10 being highest value. Religion & conservatism tie at -4.

It would make about as much sense as Republicans' current strategy to court the Latin vote by emphasizing adherence to Papal bulls***. Apparently, that isn't going over well with Republican nativists and border vigilantes, and it isn't working anywhere else either. That leaves Republicans with the Jindal strategy, i.e. don't change anything but also don't say anything.

Do you think Islam today is conservative or liberal? Based on pre-2004 voting patterns they have typically aligned with American conservatives. (The cw being that the Patriot Act drove the Muslims out of the GOP and Obama's outreach as a secret Muslim pulled them in even further) :)
But I have a feeling that most conservatives would eliminate Islam with the wave of a wand if they could. They view Islam with utter distrust and vitriol.
In a case like Boston, or Oklahoma City, or Olympic Park, the question invariably is: Are they Muslim? If so, the conservative will decry Islam, extoll Christianity, and complain about liberal equivocation and multiculturalism.
Yet, it is also common to believe that the Government wants to monitor us and our opinions; prevent independent thought; enact and enforce "hate crime laws"; and make political correctness a law of the land.
So, which is it, conservatives? Thought police for some thoughts? Religious litmus tests?
What would you like to do about Islam?
