In essence the treatment is to infect a cancer patient with radioactive bacteria. The immune system attacks the bacteria except around the tumors. The radioactivity zaps the DNA of the rapidly dividing cancer cells killing them.
The rest of the radioactive bacteria are flushed out through the liver and kidneys. This admittedly exposes these organs to relatively high levels of radiation but as these cells are replicating at a normal rate the extra radiation does far less harm.
