Organization, materials, and fuel costs for these events are quite high.
Wouldn't it be more efficient to just raise the funds, then add in the costs for running the verb-a-thon to the check you send to the charity?

I never understood the logic behind these "walk to cure cancer" type events. How exactly does walking help find a cure cancer? Why not just donate the money directly?
We walked 5 K with the dogs around Lake Merced with my Kaiser colleagues in a fund raising event for lung cancer treatment. I walked with Copernicus in 54 minutes and here are Jack and Alice crossing the finish line shortly after.
