and was covered under his fathers citizenship status or his mothers
US citizenship status. The devil is in the details....
You can still be born in the USA, but be legal citizen of another country.
This is true for UK and Mexico citizens per their constitution.
You can be born outside of the USA, and be legal US citizen,
by citizenship status of your parents.
