Would be easier just to live in your parents house until you can afford to pay cash for your own house. I'm reasonably sure that's common in many parts of the world.

Good for them! I'd have used an older trailer myself. Or a camper van.
Of course the down payment on a decent house here in the SFBA is a wee bit higher than $10k.
