The number of Americans who pay for television through cable, satellite or fiber services fell by more than a quarter of a million in 2013, the first full-year decline in TV customers, research firm SNL Kagan said.

The tally of video subscribers across the entire pay-TV industry, which includes Comcast Corp., DirecTV, and Verizon Communications Inc., dropped by 251,000 last year to about 100 million in the U.S., the firm said in a statement today.

Fewer people are buying traditional television subscriptions as online-streaming services from companies like Netflix Inc. (NFLX) and Amazon.com Inc. offer cheaper alternatives. Though satellite and telecommunications providers continued to gain users, they didn't add enough to make up for the losses of cable companies.

“While seasonally driven quarterly declines have become routine for industry watchers, the annual dip illustrates longer-term downward pressure even as economic conditions gradually improve,” SNL Kagan said.

Cable lost almost 2 million video subscribers last year, while satellite services added 170,000 customers and phone-company offerings using fiber optics, such as Verizon's FiOS and AT&T Inc.'s U-verse, netted 1.6 million.

Wait until those folks figure out they are being charged five different ways for "Digital" service, HD?(Oh well that's extra) did you say you have a digital TV?(Oh well there's $1200 dollar box we'll lease to you, you'll pay for it 10 times over, during the course of using our service. And if you don't return it, we'll put it on your Credit Report) Oh you want Digital Channels with your Digital HD upgraded service? (oh well here's the chrage for that. )

I found paying for television subscription like disrespecting my self, enough to not know when I'm being royally fucked over.
If the Cable company was a worker, working in my home, I would have picked them up by their hair and tossed them out, with their tools trailing behind them, hopefully hitting them in the head, as I slammed the door.

Bunch of Idiot greedy money hungry jack asses.
Then the never ending raising the price. That's why I drop Netflix every time they hint they'll raise the price. Once we get used to those bastards pulling that Shit, then it will be normal SOP for those Sons of Bitches too.

I never understood the thought process behind paying so much for TV (even more than $100/month) when you can use an antenna and get plenty of TV for free (at least post-digital conversion).

Money I've spent on cable in 28 years of independent living: $0

I even stiffed the NHK guy when I was living in Japan, sigh.

> plenty of TV for free

this TV is similar to what the 2-13 + UHF had available, pre-cable.

Cable kills OTA programming. 'course, the internet and/or the netflix a la carte model kills cable.

Amazon has the 4 discs of Firefly for $18. Netflix offers them for $4 or so if you're technically inclined and can get two turns per week from them.

bt has them for free, but you need comcast or another monopolist ISP to get to bt.

Me, I've banked so much unwatched and unread digital content I'll be good in Japan for about a decade : )

perform Amazing Grace and beat the REALTOR with the bag if he or she gives you
shit.

The best take of Amazing Grace was during Rest Stop movies on showtime - a true artistry that's best appreciated by hannibalean methods of red wine, liver and fava beans.
