What the report said plus demographics.
Housing costs have to do with regulations to keep them scarce
I would rather be unemployed, living with the in-laws, in LA than in Detroit or Cleveland.

What would the in-laws say about that??????
They would love it...for about a week...hahha
yeah. But it is the welfare capital of the world. I think I read the stats a while ago 1 in 5 in LA were in some sort of welfare??
working in LA, nobody works in LA !! they need to rewrite the song !!
1 in 5 on welfare. i think it might be closer to 1 in 3. then don't forget disability. a friend of mine is on disability. when people ask why, i tell the truth. his girl friend left him. he could not eat or go to work, lost is job at home depot, then when unemployment ran out he got onto 2000k a month disability plus EBT and almost free rent. he is sooooo happy now and fishing every day!
i don't know anyone who works anymore, nor do i socialize with those that do!
Dang, wish I could do that. Instead, I'm working six or seven days a week. I guess someone has to support the parasites' lifestyle.
It's all Brown's fault!!!
Which is secondary only to it all being Obama's fault. Now there is a statement that you can believe in.

Damn, I can think of a lot of scenarios that I'd choose Detroit or Cleveland. But then again, you'd have to know my in-laws.

Please work even harder. They have been complaining about making ends meet.

Sounds like mine. I'd rather live in the streets.
making ends meet? what kinda ends?
i know a family here in LA; all on either welfare or disability, and they are ALL platinum cruise members and travel on cruises several times a year !! i like to travel with them, no complaints nor a care in the world !!!

I've heard about welfare recipients vacationing in Hawaii and Vegas, but platinum members of cruise lines?
How do they do it? I want in.
figure, they have no bills; rent, healthcare, most of utilities, phone, food, even most of car insurance; ALL PAID FOR, then to top of that
THEY GET CASH !!! The cash is just for fun stuff, they have NO BILLS !! and its a pretty good amount of chump change. So all to spend it on is FUN !!f
I like being around this class of people. No complaints, plenty of free time, and lots of fun stuff do do in life.
The Platinum Cruise Family is the one i got the term Slobs from. They refer to those that work as slobs. They would say; oh, we don't talk to them, they are just SLOBS; meaning they have to work for a living and complain about losing stuff.

Some in LA also have a ton of equity in shacks that they bought 25 years ago that are now worth over 500K.
I don't know. Am I paying a relatively high price for my self esteem, or am I just a sucker? I know I believe it's the former, but then who knows ?
I'm a liberal, and I don't think it's as easy as you suggest to live well on the dole. And if it is, the rules need to change.
As for the disability scam. That's an awfully low level of integrity, to stoop that low. That is, lying about a disability. The effect of that is going to be that it becomes harder than it should for people with legitimate disabilities to get disability.
oh lord, all those houses lost during the last recession;
my friends now live in a huge mcmansion out here. they only say
"a working slob lost it during the real estate crisis"
now we get it rent free on section 8. and i can attest, its a really nice house!
and there are many such houses lost by struggling workers who now are lived in by section 8 recipients who have never worked a day in their lives! who's the fool...

The stories here are not the norm.
One could argue that Mitt Romney is living on the dole with his tax breaks for horses.
There are extremes on both ends.

Yes, the parasites thank you. You could call it "saving face" from the gnawing hordes of whorey layabouts.
no they all are not smart enough to live nicely thats correct. i know others on welfare and/or disability who do nothing but smoke and drink all day long, but still they have no bills, but choose to spend all their free money/time on smoking and drinking... they are not pretty.... but MANY do vacation a lot, have boats, trucks and cars, and eat out almost every night.
The high cost of housing here is a major factor. Other problems include a lack of skilled workers, heavy traffic and what the report calls a less-than-friendly business environment
I have to disagree with some things in the report.
Traffic and high costs are real issues, but the rest is pure boloney... the usual and common BS that we hear all the time.
There isn't lack of skilled labor here, just Bay Area pays a lot more so skilled labor tends to shift there. And less-than-friendly business environment... give me a break! Everyone hires illegals out here, how more friendly can it get? They can't legalize slavery to make it friendlier.
They hire illegals here, and pay nothing, so their customers can't afford crap either because they are not making enough money to buy the products they are making. There are no Henry Fords here I tell you.

Gonna be a lot more of them as the bush war vets age.
A million-dollar home in Antioch with a built-in swimming pool was recently rented by a tenant receiving a taxpayer-subsidized Section 8 housing voucher. The garage contained a $75,000 Mercedes SKL350, a Bentley and a custom motorcycle worth close to $100,000.The Section 8 tenant was receiving state aid for six foster kids amounting to $1,500 to $1,700 per child per month – or about $108,000 to $122,000 annually, according to Hyde. He added that the tenant employed a housekeeper, a landscaper, pool service and a nanny to help with the foster children.
In addition, the housing subsidy recipient rented a home with a pool, a waterfall, a hot tub and a basketball court across the street for a brother-in-law who is a paroled sex offender.
A $75,000 Mercedes SKL350, above, was in the garage along with a Bentley and a custom motorcycle worth close to $100,000.
all this is legal, only thing this lady did wrong was she had a felinely. you can't have a felonly and get section 8, thats illegal. how many working slobs live this nice!! and for FREE!
Folks, most of my friends on welfare and disability live like this, but you won't read about it, cause they want you to be too busy working to notice. don't believe the story, google some of the words and read for yourself.
How about bottom feeding Red States.

Tried to but the original article in the Antioch press is gone. Based on the comments here this story is already several years old:

Do you have a link that works?
Meanwhile, a companion report to the forecast highlight L.A.’s job woes. It says L.A. lost 3.1 percent of its jobs between 1990 and 2013. That’s worse than Cleveland, or even bankrupt Detroit. The report says L.A. has not had job growth in 23 years. The high cost of housing here is a major factor. Other problems include a lack of skilled workers, heavy traffic and what the report calls a less-than-friendly business environment
