I do question whether or not this "festival" is really about the straight white guy rather than a thinly veiled protest against gay rights (and interracial marriage?).

As a straight white male and a liberal, I do not feel at all threaten by people marrying others of the same gender or another ethnic group. Nor am I ashamed of my white skin or enormous penis. But how exactly have gays threatened my financial, civil, or social well-being? Not at all.

Now, I can see the need for a festival to celebrate men and masculinity as our family court system and our criminal court system treat men like second-class citizens and suspected rapist and pedophiles, guilty until proven innocent. Yes, such a male-pride parade makes sense as a backlash to the anti-male bias that permeates our culture, our courts, and even our legislation. But what the hell does that have to do with race or sexual orientation?

I would frame it a little differently.

The right was able to exploit the fact that left included under their "tent" people who took disproportionate issue with the patriarchy, or protested for fair treatment to minority groups. Most people on the left are tolerant and agree in principal with such protests, but don't see these as the pivotal most important policy issues of the day.

So the right makes fun of these minority loving fairness minded types as a ploy to get votes of the typical authoritarian personality, or bigot, or overly self righteous fundamentalist, or gullible working stiffs in fly over country, by easily generalizing and putting the liberal viewpoint down as unrealistic or worse. Meanwhile they already have the vote of the businessman and plutocrat who myopically sees the right wing policy as in his financial interest.

But at the end of the day, the policy issues that matter the most and are decided differently by the political parties are all about things like taxes, and regulations of corporations.

I think it's a valid point this sign makes if people really wanted equality, it would be for everybody, not just people who are deemed oppressed in society.

Kill your television. Please. Just chuck the damn thing. All television, including the "news", is considered "content", meant to fill the space between commercials.

Some of the "content" is actually thinly disguised advertising as well.

The gay pride parades, which admittedly I'm not into (truth be told I have my issues - i.e. I'm slightly homophobic - that is have some issues with a friend that turned out to be gay - but this is a personal problem of mine), but yeah the "pride" parades are all about coming out and being in the open about it rather than in the closet. They are part of a "coming out" movement that's been going on for many decades.

Again, my point being that you make absolutely no sense at all.

1. The erosion of due process.
2. The complete removal of privacy.
3. The combination of domestic spying, overcriminalization, and highly selective enforcement that basically means the government can arrest anyone at any time for any reason and just say it was because of such-n-such law. It's a very effective way to silence political opposition.
4. The militarization of the police.
5. The use of the military to secure corporate profits at the expense of world stability, national security, and the lives of countless civilians.
6. The wasteful military spending that is bankrupting our nation while decreasing our security.
7. The complete lack of law enforcement in the financial industry that allows criminals to wreck our economy and our finances.
8. The corrupt gerrymandering of voting districts, modern Jim Crow laws, and outright election fraud that Republicans use to steal elections from the people.
9. The complete lack of law enforcement against polluters who steal and wreck our public property and cause a myriad of health problems by poisoning our air, water, land, and food.

I was referring that people generally see gay pride festivals in a positive light but when there is a straight festival its an outrage. I'm not saying that straight people are oppressed, but if it were the other way around people would chalk it up as social oppression. That isn't equality. And I don't think you can count festivals like Oktoberfest as straight, they are more of a special interest thing. Pride festivals are all about being gay, so why can't straight people have these?

And therein lies the flaw of bigotry. This assumption is not correct. There is no evidence that being a male homosexual makes anyone more or less likely to be a pedophile. There is evidence that being male makes one more likely to be a pedophile because men are programmed to look for young mates.

But if we treated men in general as pedophiles because men are more likely to be one than women are, this would be logically flawed and a violation of the 14th Amendment. Just because most of A's are B's does not mean that most of B's are A's. Most pedophiles are men does not imply most men are pedophiles. Think about it this way. All kings are men, but the vast majority of men are not kings.

Similarly, even if most pedophiles were gay (or straight), it would be mere bigotry to treat all gays (or straights) as likely pedophiles. The same goes for racial, ethnic, and gender issues.

As for the Catholic Church, the real scandal is the cover up. It demonstrates that the Church is not a moral institution, but a political one that desires to hold on to power above anything else. That such an organization can purport to be the highest moral authority and the voice of an omnibenevolent god, is the apex of hypocrisy.
