I'm beginning to think that this is really more of a New York City thing than anything else. It seems like in NYC there's a culture that's more open to walking up to strangers and just saying "you're hot, let's hook up". Perhaps it's because NYC is so crowded and fast, people don't beat around the bush.

Everywhere else people also go after attractive mates, but they usually have to take it slower and pretend their not interested at first. Maybe the high density and fast pace of life in the Big Apple requires that suitors make their pitch quickly before the opportunity is forever gone.
