Relations between the U.S. and the European Union are being strained over disagreements about the financial and economic sanctions on Russia for its involvement in the crisis in Ukraine. The EU economies are suffering from the sanctions almost as much as is Russia’s, a predicament not fully anticipated by the EU when it agreed to join the U.S.-led attack on Russia’s economy.
