Maybe flag waving is the sign of a bullshit mentality, like jingoism or chauvinism. Taking your hat off at ball games, pledging "allegiance" to a flag, hand on heart, it's all silly pomp and circumstance.

I went to the Sharks game the other day and it appeared to me that Canadians took their hats off and mumbled too. Since it is not their flag or country, why this fealty? Because humans still act like monkeys and screech, point and throw poop when you don't conform to anything, no matter how trivial.

Yes it is much better not to have any "jingoism" it is much better to pretend that we are all individuals without any allegiance to anything as in the 2nd photo. It is just that pesky truth that over half of all Americans depend on the state for some sort of public transfer.

Maybe the 1st picture reflects a time when people were happy for the freedom granted by the state to live a life.
