U.S. destroys ISIS headquarters after militant posts photo online

The U.S. Air Force found a hidden Islamic State command-and-control center after a militant posted a selfie of himself near the building on social media.
After the militant bragged online about the center's capabilities, his photo provided enough information that the building was destroyed less than 24 hours later, Defense Tech reports.

“The guys that were working down out of Hurlburt, they're combing through social media and they see some moron standing at this command," Air Force Gen. Hawk Carlisle, head of Air Combat Command, explained on Monday.

"And in some social media, open forum, bragging about the command and control capabilities for Daesh, ISIL. And these guys go: ‘We got an in.' So they do some work; long story short, about 22 hours later through that very building, three [Joint Direct Attack Munitions] take that entire building out.”

the bigger question is why would the military announce how they found out about the facility?
Now every ISIS militant has been educated as to what not to do when taking a selfie...
Thanks Obamacare!

That's the type of thinking that argues for not disclosing the ways in which our military/intel. arms gather information on "terrorists". It's the "logic" used to prevent any small bit of oversight in government agencies in the new homeland security post 9-11 era. That thinking has eroded our general rights to privacy in the US.

The truth is, the best "bad guys" already know how to hide, and basic things like what rule 1 is : throw away your cellphone. Posting a picture online bragging about your command is a neophyte mistake, and good luck for us. The better ISIS members, especially those in the media war, aren't this dumb.

They spy on us, and everyone knows it. And my librul friends say it does not make us safer. What a joke.

How about an ISIS member creating a "selfie" and having in the background a target they want taken out? Hopefully our intel would not fall for that.

While you bring up valid points, the fact still remains that we've just educated all the neophyte members of isis regarding cell phone protocol.
Why publicize the innocuous 'selfie' channel of information, when in this case it had paid off in spades?
Why not just broadcast that we did blow up an ISIS post, without telling how we found out about it's existence?

As we continually pick off members of isis on a daily basis, 'neophyte' recruits are taking their place. This represents a continuing opportunity to capitalize on neophyte mistakes, as long as we are not training them to avoid those mistakes via social or any other type of media.
The current batch of US military chiefs in charge are...rather...stupid.

so
1- the militant bragged online and got blown up
2- DefenseTech bragged online about the militant bragging online, and in the process educated future neophyte isis members about the dangers of using cellphones..

what does this say about 'bragging'?

What would be nice is a selfie of a guy smiling and a bomb coming at him in the background.

duh doi!
the us military released that bit of info ON PURPOSE probably (but who really knows why) to get the isis people to NOT use social media as much. As they are using 'our technology against us' when they use FB to recruit members. If they go back to pigeons and smoke signals - hard to recruit.

It's not technology if you can't brag about it.

They were took out with a JDAM...

Twenty-two hours after seeing the post, U.S. warplanes went in for the kill.

"Long story short...three JDAMs take the entire building out," Carlisle said in the speech to the Air Force Association.

A JDAM is a kit attached to a conventional bomb that converts it into a "smart" weapon, according the U.S. Navy. The kit, made by Boeing and put in the tail of the bombs, uses a global positioning system and internal navigation system to guide the bombs onto targets.

Using GPS coordinates, JDAM bombs have an error rate of less than 40 feet, the Navy says.

It didn't really kill anybody it just makes them disappear so future suck ass presidents can take credit for killing them.

You know there's an Air force pilot selfie somewhere.

15   lostand confused   2015 Jun 5, 5:39pm

Well probably ISIS stood in front of their rivals and took a selfie. Many afghans in Guantanamo bay were reputed to be normal folks who were "turned in" for reward money/old rivalries. getting he Americans to do their dirty work for them.

Our feminazis have feminized us too much-or the military industrial complex wants a never ending war. We spend more than all other countries combined on the military and can't do anything about a bunch of cave dwellers. It is silly.

I had the same thought.

I have to believe that with those various tribes in Afghanistan, that happened all the time. If you wanted some enemy taken out, just get some of your people jobs providing "intelligence" to the US military.
