I bought a super 8 Sony 100X zoom Camcorder at the zenith of the 8mm tape camcorders.
I thought I had bought one for the ages. The zoom on that thing was equally impressive, especially if mounted on a tripod, as keeping the shot steady at great distance was a challenge. Otherwise the zoomed video looked grainy and blurry. 8mm camcorders were extinct by the next Christmas and the remaining 8mm tape stock shot through the roof.
Now we've got phones with more megapixels and takes better pictures, than the Nikon 6000 DSLR we bought a few years ago.
We've got a closet full of consumer electronics that our phones have made obsolete.
