Why would women be up in arms over this? The teacher is the authority figure. The teacher is not the equal of the student. She is totally in the wrong. The adult is the responsible party. You don't blame the kid.
That said, this seems to be happening a lot. Perhaps it might help if we didn't allow newly minted, 22-year-old teachers teach high school. There's not much of an age difference... A less mature teacher might think she's/he's still squarely in that peer group with high schoolers. That said, this might happen less often if they required a 15-year age difference between the teacher and the average age of the students he/she teaches. Future high school teachers could start their careers teaching 4th or 5th grade and then work their way up. There might be less confusion that way. No one would mistake a person who is fifteen years younger than themselves as a "peer." It won't stop real predators, but it might help prevent the more innocent (albeit still stupid, wrong, and illegal) transgressions from happening.

I agree, and additionally it used to be that female teachers were more prevalent in the lower grades, and male teachers more prevalent in higher grades.
I also think this is the way it used to be before men were all hounded out of the teaching profession by a feminist witch-hunt against all males as being opportunistic predators. Cf. the golden rule above: It turned out that indeed it is the female teachers that have a high incidence of predatorial conduct.

A DISGRACED teacher who faces jail for having sex with one of her teen pupils has revealed the sexy selfie she used to seduce him.
Mary Beth Haglin, 24, has given an exclusive interview in which she talks about the steamy six month affair she had with a 17-year-old lad in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
Speaking with Inside Edition, the former substitute teacher revealed that the boy compared their relationship to Oscar-winning movie The Graduate (1967) – in which Dustin Hoffman's character is seduced by older woman Mrs Robinson.
Haglin was charged with sexual exploitation and faces up to two years behind bars.
Haglin insists she fell in love with the teen after he seduced her.
She said: "I was completely head over heels.
"He would come into my classroom, grab a Post-It, write something and stick it to my desk on his way out.
"One read, ‘I love you so much, my empress.'â€
In return for the notes she sent the boy sexy snaps showing her posing in racy underwear.
Haglin confirmed the pair would meet in a car park nearly every day and romp in her vehicle.
She said: "We met several times a week, not every time was just to have sex.
"There were times we would sit and talk. I thought in my mind this was some sort of real relationship.â€
The affair ended when another pupil saw them together.
She was sacked from her role at George Washington High School and was arrested in July after turning herself into police.
While the age of consent in Iowa is 16, Haglin was charged because she was in a position of authority.
She now admits she made a "terrible mistakeâ€.
She said: "I realise how stupid I was and what a terrible mistake I made.
"I thought that it was something that could be kept secret and that nobody would ever know."
