So adjusted for CPI, the Dow Jones had a net 0% return from 1929 to 1994. Then from 1994 to 2000 it 150%, i.e. grew to 2.5 times it's value. Can you say bubble?
Stocks outperform inflation in the long run due to economic growth. One of the best investments you can make.
Stocks in general. The Dow Jones doesn't represent the stock market as a whole. The S&P 500 index and the Wilshire 5000 index do.
