Don't forget about Congress

Before the primaries were decided I posted numerous times that if Bernie was not nominated a lot of Bernie supporters, most of whom could not vote in the primaries, would stay home and not vote for Democrats for Congress in the general election. Nominating Hillary would cost the Democrats both Senate and House seats. Unfortunately, I was right as usual.

I hate being right, but there is an important lesson to learn here. Congress, not the White House, was the really important race this election cycle. If Democrats had taken both houses, they could block all crazy right-wing policies for the next two, if not four, years. This would prevent Trump from doing anything disastrous, while still affording him the opportunity to surprise us all yet again and act like a socially responsible liberal. He's actually liberal on a few issues, far more so than Clinton or the Republican Party in general.

But no, now we have to rely on a Republican Congress to keep Trump in check, and that can go two ways. They could oppose his policies and piss off the base, or they could embrace his policies and wreck their financial interests. Losing proposition for Republicans either way, so good there, but still dangerous for us if they pick the latter.

The best case scenario right now is for the Democratic Party to immediately institute internal reforms, kick out the old patriarchy, and adopt the Green Party's platform and Elizabeth Warren's reforms. They should be fighting like crazy over the next two years to energize the liberals and pro-middle-class voters so they can take back Congress in the midterm election, which will be a challenge since Democrats do worse in midterms, but it is possible if they adopt a platform that the American middle class likes.

Hmmm, that option (especially the Dizzy Lizzy Warren idea) doesn't work for me at all. Some folks, when they find themselves in a hole, look for the nearest shovel to keep on digging.

A lot of people like Elizabeth Warren a hell of a lot. And the people who don't like her, are voting Trump no matter what.

Naw, I don't like Warren, end of story. I didn't vote FOR Trump, I voted against Hillary. Subtle but a difference - it was the ONLY choice I had to make sure she didn't get elected.

Then you are extremely unusual and not representative of the general population.

Warren has a 61% approval rating and most people who would consider voting Democrat consider her a rock star for her outspoken advocacy of reforms.

Warren has ruffled feathers in the party and is a committed warrior for progressives. At the same time, she has been a loyal team player who raises vast sums of money for Democrats and campaigns for candidates up and down the ballot. Her populist message resonates in places where Clinton and President Obama aren’t welcome, and her workhorse mentality in the Senate has endeared her to congressional Democrats.

"She's a rock star, and there's a real hunger to see her get involved,” says Sean Downey, a former Obama campaign operative and Democratic strategist based in New Hampshire, where Warren will keynote a party convention next month. "A fundraising email from her or a Web video gets people more excited about Democrats, gets more people involved, and motivates small-dollar donors"

And she would have been even more popular if she hadn't endorsed Clinton and instead ran as the nominee. Having to support Clinton to oppose Trump cost her some popularity. Nonetheless, she's still quite popular with both liberals and blue middle class voters.

As if you didn't already know this.
