Never happened. The entire GOP machine got behind Jeb, Rubio, and Cruz in succession and did everything possible to boost the anti-Trump candidates. $100M was spent on Jeb in the months prior to Super Tuesday. Every neocon, "security expert" from the MIC, every billionaire dollar was aligned against Trump. And almost all of them continued to fight Trump until the last minute by abstaining or pushing Evan McMuffin as a spoiler.
The GOPe machine was as anti-Trump and the WaPo-DNC was against Sanders from the get-go.
The voters ignored the GOPe Amnesty Brigade and picked their candidate.
Yup. The idiot Democrats that voted for Hillary in the primaries really screwed it up, big time. It was all about getting a woman as president, instead of getting the best man as president.
The election between the two worst candidates EVER. The people who ran in the primaries also sucked. Bernie??? The man is so out of touch with reality that it's not funny. The other candidates on the republican side were the 'same ole, same ole'. One of the BIG reasons that Trump got elected was because he WASN'T the 'same ole, same ole'. Add to that the media trying to JAM Hillary down our throats. The public is just plain tired of being TOLD who we should vote for, tired of the lies and half-truths, tired of the 'same ole, same ole'. We were looking for and wanting a change, how will it work out? Well, I'm pretty sure it won't be 'same old, same ole'.
making "high negatives" Trump the tallest midget
You mean the elite dropped the ball by letting a populist candidate move forward?
People forget the universe is unpredictable. No one controls everything.
You can't ignore half the population of the country without having these people mad at you sometime.
Close the door and they'll climb your window that you happened to leave open.
Was there a better candidate for Republicans to vote for, instead of Trump?
Was there a better candidate for Democrats, besides Hilldog?

It would seem that, while the Dems are supposedly soul-searching, the truth is any Democrat with less negatives probably would have trounced Trump. The primary voters on the Democratic side (I believe) checked the boxes. Woman? Sure! Clinton? Who doesn't love one of those? Your rightwing attacks will melt in the voting booth!
On the GOP side, had the votes not been split among so many candidates, the establishment would've been able to easily dump Trump to the ash heap. The candidates that did run pulled votes away from each other, making "high negatives" Trump the tallest midget. And political midgets they were, as each retort made them look foolish, while they each simultaneously tried to attack AND cozy up to the perceived front-runner. Their efforts were confusing, uncoordinated, and ineffective. Trump got the most votes cast against him (a record) during the primary season, failed to get the popular vote, and won't have much of a coalition going forward.
So while Clinton's primary voters were "okay" with the candidate, the lack of enthusiasm tamped down turnout. But it was not with acclaim that Trump was even the nominee of the GOP. Two lame-ass candidates is what we got, and the Dems botched yet another big one, but the blame for both rests largely on the primary voter.
