Some things outlive their usefulness. As humanity advances, previous beneficial instincts such as tribalism become a hinderance to progress and further improvements/developments. At the very least they lead to unnecessary friction and at their worst, they result in bloodbath. The peaceful coexistenz of various people in SFBA demonstrates that multiculturalism works when people are sufficiently and appropriately educated.

Genes don't change like that just because they are no longer useful.

Yes, it's a dangerous thing. Yet it's absurd to pretend it doesn't or shouldn't exist.

Multiculturalism has been a catastrophe everywhere it has been attempted.
Silicon valley first has never been replicated anywhere, and it's not a community in the traditional sense. There is no sense of belonging. The only thing that keeps people together there is the unlimited greed. It couldn't survive as a separate country.
It's also completely wrong to claim that education can in anyway oppose tribalism. 911 attackers were mostly successful educated engineers too.
It's as if nobody read a book on Athropology.
"Demonize the majority, blame them for society's ills. Design an economy that makes them the primary victims, while denying their claims to victimhood. Then be shocked when there is a reaction and insist they go back to shutting up"
Societies need some kind of Touchstone of Commonality, whether that is Religion, Ethnicity, Philosophy, or Ideology (ie "American Dream", "Dictatorship of the Proletariat").
Neoliberals want to replace all touchstones with "Compete Globally, and if you lose, you are an inferior wretch who deserves it" which doesn't sell well except to the already successful, most of whom were born on third base.

"Can a divided America heal?"
It will never heal until all D & R Voters DIE!
I forgot:
"Gloat about their alleged declining power."
If you think the Pundits got the election wrong, just wait until you see how Hispanics vote 20 years from now.

It amazing that a world leader doesn't understand that countries exist only because of "us", citizen of the country, against "them" who are not citizens.
The Obama quote doesn't begin to imply that he doesn't understand that.
It's like saying the person that complains about rising wealth inequality wants everyone to have the same wealth. So stupid.
Civic Nationalism, or Liberal Nationalism. I think I prefer the first definition. Sounds closest to my position.
I like Jonathon Haidt. There is a well known Ted talk of his about the point of view of republicans and democrats.
If you haven't seen it, check it out. https://www.ted.com/talks/jonathan_haidt_on_the_moral_mind
Those of us old enough to remember how it was 50 years ago, can see how much things have changed.
He's probably right, that we democrats need to try to empathize with republicans. We should have been doing that long ago, and they too us. We would be in a far different place right now if we had. Certainly Trump would not be President elect. It's not easy to undo hate, that is basically reciprocating hate, that is reciprocating hate, that is reciprocating hate, etc.

"President Obama, in some of his strongest language since Donald J. Trump's election last week, on Tuesday warned against the rise of nationalistic tribalism"
“I do believe, separate and apart from any particular election or movement, that we are going to have to guard against a rise in a crude sort of nationalism or ethnic identity or tribalism that is built around an ‘us' and a ‘them,'” Mr. Obama said.
It amazing that a world leader doesn't understand that countries exist only because of "us", citizen of the country, against "them" who are not citizens.
The elite is defending a vision where there is no frontiers, no countries, people have no cultural differences, people goods and services can come and go as they please.
They are setting themselves up for a huge backslash. Tribalism is in our genes. Even if we could fully get rid of it, it's not obvious that this is a good answer.
