Likely this will be the fourth chemical attack committed by Syrian forces.

Our response will be typical condemnation with no teeth. If anything we appear to be moving closer to Assad and Russia here.

I'm going to watch for what Mattis says here. Our response from Obama was the most disappointing foreign policy blunder in my lifetime. Don't think Trump admin. will be any different.

Saber rattle saber rattle. (whisper privately) "How can we help you beat the 'terrorists'?"

What we can agree on is that today Islam is being used to get people to behave terribly.

OK, yes, we agree on that.

But I'd go further, not only is Saudi Arabia using Islam to launch terrorists around the world, but the terrorists like to do it because Islam tells them to.

But once islam gets stronger it sucks intellectual thoughts.

Typically, all religions do that, and that's gross oversimplification for the decline of the Islamic golden age. Islamic cultures didn't recede because of their religion.

How far back do you want to trace algebra's development? India doesn't seem to be able to claim initial origination of algebra either.

PCGyver says

I'd like to know what religion this doesn't apply to?

None come to mind.

How many religions do you know. Learn world history. Eastern religions don't do that. They question what is wrong with older religion and propose a change live with it. They dont go about killing everyone from old religion. Christianity found this approach is wrong and is trying to correct itself. We don't see that in Islam. This Wahhabi mentality is going to consume us all.
Rew you still did not answer my question do you think Indian system is archiac and islamic system is advanced. If you dont want to answer it just say I will learn about them.

Islamic cultures didn't recede because of their religion.

You only have to look back at the last 30 years of history. Countries like Afghanistan, Iran and Egypt were much more modern, secular, tolerant and successful before the Khomeni revolution in 1970's and the rise of Saudi Wahabbi money and influence in the Sunni countries.

My next door neighbor fled Iran in 1979 and is appalled at how his country has gone backwards in that time.

Don't do what? Push their own ideologies at the expense of science and reason? Or are you really claiming no other Eastern religions have any violence or extremism in them, ever?

Are you backing your claim that Islamic culture, from it's golden age, receded primarily because of Islamic practice itself?

indc says

Rew you still did not answer my question do you think Indian system is archiac and islamic system is advanced.

Mohammad Al-Khwarizmi adopted the Indian numeric system, and yes, wrote his own original mathematics texts using it. He is the first one to harmonize Greek and Indian math together, and then essentially, make a clear split and definition for Algebra itself. It's not an accident we call the numbering system today Arabic numerals, despite how you may feel about the ability to lay claim to them.

Credit where credit is due. Mohammad Al-Khwarizmi didn't simply copy things. He originated and developed much of modern algebra himself.

That's not the collapse of the golden age of Islam. That's the modern rise of Islamic extremism. That didn't just magically spring forth from Islam itself.

But it is contemporary proof that Islam (unlike any other contemporary religion) can drag entire civilizations down (both Sunni and Shia).

Every other corner of the globe has advanced in that time while the majority of the Muslim/Arab world has declined.

People tell them that is what Islam says to do. They can read the Koran all they like, but there are multiple reasonable interpretations of any holy book, which is why you have various branches of religion with different interpretations of the bible. There is a difference. Also, Religions are defined by the people who practice them more so than the holy book that they use. Otherwise, all branches of Christianity would be the same.

Needless to say, he was very "motivated" (like most non-Muslim religious minorities) to get out once the Islamist nut-balls took power.

The Babylonians invented algebra. Everyone else just advanced it.

55   curious2   2017 Apr 5, 2:13pm

YesYNot says

there are multiple reasonable interpretations of any

You write like someone who has read neither the complete Bible (Old Testament and New Testament) nor the Koran. In short, you judge a book by its cover, when you should know more about the contents.

The Bible has multiple authors and some of it reads like a transcript of an argument among some of the most argumentative people in the history of the world. The OT commands the conquest of the "promised land," approximately modern Israel, but says to leave alone the neighboring nations, and even to extend the equal protection of the laws to the strangers who live among you. Leviticus reads a bit like Amish country, setting out a dress code and rules for those who wear the uniform; you can see the Hasidim with their beards and black clothing, they look almost Amish, deliberately separate, and they don't try to convert or kill disbelievers. Very significantly, both Amish and Hasidim allow apostasy: when you get to be an adult, you can say this is not the path for you, change out of the uniform into civilian clothes, and go your own way; no one will kill you for that. Christianity renounces violence. Some people have indeed used Christianity as an excuse for violence, as least as far back as Constantine, but it doesn't actually say that, so the center of gravity is not there.

The Koran purports to be the writings of exactly one commander in chief, the charlatan Mohamed. He was allowed to change his mind as he went along, so it is to be interpreted chronologically. The chronology (the life of Mohamed) is the decoder ring that many or most Muslims know about and you don't. Where you see different verses saying different things, they see a clear sequence, described also in the process of Islamization. Where the Muslim population is small, they emphasize tolerance; as they grow larger, they tend to grow bolder, because they are commanded to impose Sharia where they can. In most countries that have Muslim majorities, most Muslims demand Sharia. Islam says to impose Sharia upon believers and disbelievers alike, and Sharia says to kill apostates and blasphemers. That is the center of gravity of Islam: it tends towards Sharia.

If you don't have time to read the Bible and Koran, then please at least read Churchill on Islam. He traveled very extensively, and his writings cannot be blamed on the most recent 30 or 40 years of rising Saudi influence; to the contrary, he predicted the Saudi threat, a century ago. Islam originated as a religion of highway robbers and pirates plundering prosperous coastal cities and trade caravans, capturing and enslaving and ransoming. The Barbary Pirates' behavior was thoroughly described, and thoroughly Islamic. Claiming you can invite some number into your civilization is like saying you can invite some number of pirates onto your ship. Islam reduces whole civilizations as Churchill described. Disbelievers are highly motivated to get out of wherever Islam has taken over, while believers look around for somewhere more prosperous they can conquer. Please know the difference. We have both met people who were highly "motivated" to get out of Iran, but you don't seem to understand the motivation, because you would import the very pirates they were trying to get away from.

I'd trade our entire IT department for just the seven Arab SW engineers I work with daily.

How do you know if the Arab engineers are actually Muslim? Hint: you can't simply ask them, especially if they might be overheard by Muslims, because Islam commands the death penalty for apostasy. Additional hint: engineers are not a representative sample of any population, least of all the Muslim population of the Arabian peninsula, where the most popular university major is Islamic studies. They may have chosen engineering specifically so they could escape from the Islamic domination of the Arabian peninsula. You might be on here defending the very hateful fraud that those engineers got away from, and advocating that Sharia enforcers should be allowed to pursue them everywhere, and you might be imagining they would thank you for that.

I really feel sorry for liberals like Rew. They are islamic apologists who think islam is this great religion which teaches peace. i understand you don't like your own culture because of its history but islam also has same faults and you are ok with it.
Liberals are thick headed people. I have shown that the present number system is of Indian origin which is accepted by mathematics all over the world. But s/he still says that it is arabic system because that is what s/he read in their textbooks. I tried to explain how eastern religions spread without hatred but they cannot accept that it is true. There was never religious persecution against science and technology in eastern religions and Rew is not ready to accept it.
If you can't accept a new concept then there is no difference between you and a religious-muslim.

Hey REBTS, low iq people like you should not comment on others IQ. See I called you stupid now let me explain why.
1) You are trying to compare present day IQ with first millenium IQ for which you dont have any data point.
2) You are trying to use average IQ to understand advancements in knowledge. You dont need 100 millions Einsteins. You need only 1.
3) The difference between arabic and indian population's IQ is just '2' which can easily be sampling error.
4) You can use average IQ to gauge GDP or some such number not how intelligent few people can be.
5) Again you can't phantom the population size(1.2bil) can produce atleast 2 times more intelligent people than US(350mil).
6) China which has more average IQ than India now is coveting Indian engineers to work in its tech sector.
