I read this article, and wondered why people bother with the wing suit rush. Now, a parachute is much safer, but I wondered, how risky is it?

It turns out that about 3.5 million parachute jumps are completed each year in the US and there are 20 fatalities. Interestingly, there are about 3.3 million muslims in the US. If you include 9/11, about 74 Americans die each year from Islamist terrorism. If you exclude 9/11 (same article), the number drops to 6. So, having a Muslim in the US is about as dangerous as having a person take a parachute jump, and the number of Muslims living in the US happens to be about the same as the number of jumps. The trend is not similar, though. Parachuting risk per jump has been cut in half since 2000. You can't really say that about Muslims in America.

Here's the primary difference.

I can choose whether or not I jump out of airplanes.

As opposed to libfucks forcing the risk onto the populace...

Try looking at places where Muslims don't have to cross the ocean in order to commit atrocities.

Murder of civilians is a daily ordeal. And this is what you people want to bring into your country? So your children can get blown up one day, while you justify it with some misuse of the statistics?

Folks - it's just meant to put things into perspective. Terrorism is perceived as an existential threat that has captivated tremendous attention, prompted tremendous expenditure programs, causes all sorts of inconvenience, and has caused many lives in war. OTOH, the death toll is similar to that of a minor recreational activity that the vast majority of Americans would never do and don't pay a lick of attention to. It's a trick of the mind that causes so much attention. I'm surprised Dilbert's mom hasn't written about that - or maybe he has.

It's not an argument to absolve terrorism. Hell, it's not even an argument on relative risk. If it were, I would have said that there are only 3.3 million jumps per year and 20 deaths. There are over 330 million people living in the US with similar terrorist death rates. Therefore, at current levels, you could live in the US for 100 years, and your chances of getting killed by a terrorist are the same as jumping out of an airplane once. Mind you, this is something that people do for a few seconds of entertainment.
