Yes, we should try and contact other life forms.
If they are a lot more advanced than us, they already know we exist. We are safe.
If they are more backward than us, we are safe.
Odds are, we are the backward species. We fuck up everything.
I figure they'll leave us alone until we have an ability to leave our solar system to fuck up other planets. That's when they'll make contact and tell us the galactic rules.
