It's really just an energy balance --- how much time / energy / pollution do you produce to obtain the raw materials that make the "environmentally friendly" products less the amount of pollution saved over the life of product compared to the "dirty" equivalent.
Lead and Zinc are used for many industrial products, including certain batteries (some of which are used in electric cars and hybrids). So much for a "Green" vehicle.
