There’s no upside to a shutdown for Democrats. The best case for them is their voters don’t wake up and blame them for it. Clearly Trump sees it as a political win. Otherwise he wouldn't have tanked the deal that he agreed to and everybody worked on for 4 months. The Dems don't seem too worried about the political fallout. For every American who strongly supports Trump, there are two who strongly hate him. It seems that this gridlock is just going to further galvanize whatever people happen to feel at the moment. I believe that's why there's a not-leaked bombshell news item to sway a few peoples emotions before the shutdown. Once things blow over, the showmanship about the memo will die down.

Trump scuttled a bipartisan agreement to fix DACA two days after agreeing to it.
2 days before the shutdown, the WH said that it supported a short term deal that included funding for CHIP.
1 day before the shutdown, Trump said he didn't want CHIP funding in there.
Trump has publicly stated the the President is responsible for government shutdowns.
The Republicans are being obstinate over immigration by refusing to vote for something popular (fixing DACA) unless they get something unpopular (full funding for wall? it's hard to know what they want, exactly). That is why they are not writing bills that more Dems would vote for. The reason that negotiations failed is because Captain Chaos threw a bomb in the mix and left a week for people to fix the mess.
