What are you talking about? Few people doubt that after 100 years of use, the gas engine isn't going to gradually be replaced by something new. Electric, fuel cell and hydrogen are the current contenders. If it is electric cars initially, we may see where most of the juice needed to charge the cars is generated by fossil fuels anyway.

What are you talking about? Few people doubt that after 100 years of use, the gas engine isn't going to gradually be replaced by something new. Electric, fuel cell and hydrogen are the current contenders. If it is electric cars initially, we may see where most of the juice needed to charge the cars is generated by fossil fuels anyway.

Fossil fuels still have a long run to go. More cars are sold in a day in countries around the world that can't afford to subsidize electric cars than are sold in a year in GB. There were 200k electric out of 17 million sold in the US. Do you really think there is going to be 10-15k subsidy for the 16.8 million other cars any time soon? Average income people aren't going to be popping 10-15k extra it costs for an electric car that isn't subsidized.
Before you go all eco zealot on me I am totally in favor of reducing fossil fuels. No one is going to eliminate them, things like large cargo ships and airplanes are very very unlikely to ever run on batteries or nuclear reactors. Barring some huge technological break through it's going to be a long haul in reducing fossil fuel consumption.

Many years ago, when I was at a car museum next to Luray Caverns in VA, one of the many classic cars they had on display include a 1908 Baker Electric. It had a 48 volt electric motor and a top speed of 25 mph. According to the sign, this car was very popular with the ladies and during WW2, people who kept their electrics used them during time of gas rationing.

The UK has already decided to ban the sale of new cars and vans with internal combustion engines by 2040 but some are calling for that ban to happen sooner in order to address the persistent problem of poor air quality near many roads and highways. This week, Ben van Beurden, CEO of Royal Dutch Shell, told The Guardian he supports the calls to move up the effective date of the ban.
