OK, it was a softball question, and perhaps PC prevented you from hitting it out of the park. At the risk of being called a racist, while being a firm believer in debunking the very idea of "wrong think" or taboo subjects, the obvious reason is that for many people, Africans resemble apes or monkeys. And so it is quite easy then to put down Africans by implying they are less intelligent animals. For the record, I do not ascribe to such beliefs, but can see why folks see the resemblance.

Saying that, I do remember in High School when a teacher brought in a spider monkey to a pep rally. The Spider monkey had the exact same face as a black kid in the class. It was his black friends that first noticed the resemblance and gave the kid grief about it.

I'd say that middle eastern men resemble apes closer by body than blacks who show more resemblance in the face. And yes Europeans resemble more Neanderthals. Nothing rays cyst about that, just observation.
