Deployment will fill request from Department of Homeland Security

WASHINGTON—Defense Secretary Jim Mattis is expected to approve a request for 800 U.S. troops to travel to the U.S.-Mexico border to provide logistical support for border agents, a U.S. official said Thursday.

Mr. Mattis received the request from the Department of Homeland Security on Wednesday, the official said. DHS Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen is expected to publicly address the request later today.

Once approved, the Pentagon will determine which troops to dispatch to the border and begin planning their mission. U.S. troops aren’t legally permitted to use lethal force in law-enforcement operations. They are expected instead to do things like provide equipment and labor for tasks such as building fences and erecting tents for border officials.

The troops are expected to be in place by next week in anticipation that a caravan of thousands of migrants, currently more than 1,000 miles from the U.S.-Mexican border, could reach it that soon if they board buses or trains. It isn’t known whether the deployed forces will be federally activated National Guard troops or active members of the U.S. military.

Migrant caravans traveling north from El Salvador and Honduras through Mexico have become a focus of the Trump administration, and the president has threatened to use military force to repel them.

Mr. Mattis, the Pentagon chief, arrived Thursday in Manama, Bahrain, to speak at a regional conference.

I'm hoping he deploys the 75th Rangers.
3   Heraclitusstudent   2018 Oct 25, 10:17am

He makes it sound like they are going to do something to stop the caravan.
In fact... "for logistical support". Probably to help them fill the asylum forms.

I was thinking that one helicopter gunship would be enough, as long as they can carry enough bullets, since you know Gatling Guns can go through that stuff pretty quickly.

I have a theory about all this border shit, and it has nothing to do with keeping people out. I live in San Diego, and have been a frequent traveler to Baja. After 9/11 things become much more restrictive with the US, even crossing down they would stop us sometimes. Yet I don't see any decrease in the number of illegals getting in. What does a giant wall and armed guard remind you of? Yeah, I don't think it's to keep people out.

Now what if the troops to the border, and the caravan's arrival isn't to co-inside with the mid-terms, but instead with the next financial collapse? Far fetched you say? Just remember we already have the largest incarcerated population in the world...

Elaborate: supposedly "financial collapse" happened after wall is finished. Than what? How does the wall help and whom? Saving Mexico from invading hordes of baby boomers with 0 balance in their 401k?

Wouldn't people go north to Canada first? Build a log cabin, eat beavers, make snowmen, drink bear, why would anybody go to mexico?
8   socal2   2018 Oct 25, 12:29pm

I just spoke to one of my clients this morning who works for the Feds on the border and he said the new 30 foot fences they are putting up in San Diego are very impressive when you stand right next to them. This is not Trump's new border wall, just new maintenance on existing fencing plugging some holes.

Posse Comitatis. Unless he is sending the Coast Guard, logistics is all he can legally carry out. Otherwise it's lock him up.The Army cannot legally enforce the law. I thought all the wing nuts knew that...

Exactly. And even if people decided to go abroad, so what? Tying "the wall" with "the financial crisis" makes no fucking sense.

I'll give them one thing: unlike Hollywood celebrities, at least when they say they're leaving the country they're serious.

Tongue in cheek, but I suppose they could sail up the the Rio Grande. The point is the armed services cannot enforce US laws, on U S soil legally. So Trumps talk is pretty much just that, now I suppose he could invade Mexico to keep these people away from the border. The Govs of the states involved could call up the national guard.

You think Honduran peasants observing uniformed personell from the other bank of above mentioned river would be as well-versed in all these intricacies as you are? I think they'll just refrain from crossing the border on that particular stretch. Moreover, nothing prevents US Military from observing and communicating with the actual law enforcement which will arrive and make the arrests.

The real solution is mandatory prison time for all employers of illegals.

Republicans have control of both houses of government, so why is this solution not being made into law and passed?

Because on this issue they are passive traitors.
18   Patrick   2018 Oct 25, 6:35pm

Indeed, it is a kind of proof that most Republican Congressmen are working for the US Chamber of Commerce and not for vast majority of American citizens.

I'd disparage them more for it, but the Democrats are even worse. They are active traitors, supporting mass immigration of illegals and encouraging attacks on our border defense forces, such as ICE. Democrats "Think of the children!" but do not talk about what mass illegal immigration does to the wages of poor US citizens or their children.

Again, this is an absolute worst case scenario, but think forced labor in order to fix the economy, maybe justified by people not being able to pay back debt, and therefore contributing to the economic collapse. Don't want any workers escaping.

I don't think it's a matter of choosing one or the other to relocate. I think it's more about getting a flight out to somewhere better, like New Zealand. In that case, I'll take the 10 minute drive to the pedestrian bridge, walk directly into the TJ airport, and the society that works on bribes.

Forced labor? With ~400,000,000 guns in the hands of the people? LOL. Good luck with that.

Why take bribe from you when they can take everything you've got and give you nothing in return? You'll be lucky to keep your life. In case of any "collapse" in US Mexico will be 1000 times worse.

We have seen what they do in a crisis situation already in New Orleans. I know most of us would never dream of turning in our guns, but how many in New Orleans felt the same way? And we do know the military standard for recruitment has been pretty low, and that military commanders who wouldn't consider operations on US soil were being replaced under Obama Admin.

If you go there to stay yes. In a situation like that, the scenario I outlined would only work if you saw it coming, and reacted in time to get out just as things started going downhill. You really think airport employees are going to try and rob you?

I see a contradiction: if the "scenario" is somewhat off in the (near) future and you (and very limited number of others) only "see it coming" and is mostly contained to US - you won't need any "bribes" to fly out. Like you don't need them now. No need to even go through Tijuana - SAN or LAX will work fine. But if the "scenario" is more or less "public knowledge" by the time you're crossing into Mexico you'll be cleaned out by the first police patrol (if the gangs won't get you before that). That kind of people are very much attuned to the events which can lead to break-down of the law and are eager to use it to their advantage. Then let's not forget their "TSA", customs and border enforcement, etc -  they will know who you are and what you have. The very second the news of fat gringos loaded with cash and precious metals fleeing into Mexicio because US of A is in some kind of chaos it will be a fucking feeding frenzy. Better to have something belt-fed in your carry-on. ;)

I am more inclined to think that we have more of an issue with lack of enforcement of existing laws. However, yes a death penalty for employing illegals would be nice as well

I'm assuming it's not geography, but police powers that are the issue. Soldiers are very limited in what they can do domestically while the Coast Guard are quasi police.
31   MisdemeanorRebel   2018 Oct 29, 8:06pm

If there is martial law, note than not every solider is in the 101st Airborne or 3rd ACR.

They would have to use AAFES* "combat service" units, and those would be mincemeat for any determined resistance.

This is all academic since it wouldn't happen anyway. A coup would be more likely.

* I don't mean the store

It's still a less regulated airport, with no TSA/federal security checkpoints. If the feds are the one's planning this, a halt to international travel under some "safety" guise could stop flights up here while flights in TJ are still going out. Also, the airport is extremely close to the border, zero minutes walking(ped bridge), 5-10 minutes drive.
