I've noticed (after speaking to several californians mainly), that they will go through any number of verbal gymnastics to avoid using the word FAT. I've heard HEAVYSET, BIG, HUSKY, OVERWEIGHT, PLUMP, etc.

My female friend says "big" instead of fat.
It's because a couple of her sisters are obese, another is fat as is her mother.
