A Jewish father gets a letter from his son. In it his son tells him he has moved to Jerusalem and decided to become a Christian. Oy, vey! The father is obviously distraught. He goes to his best friend and tells him the terrible news and asks him what he should do.
And his friend says, “Funny you should mention it... I too have received a letter from my son, and he also has told me he has gone to Jerusalem and decided to become a Christian. Imagine our shame; we are both good Jewish fathers. What should we do?” So they go to the Rabbi, and they tell him about the letters they have received, and how ashamed they are, and they ask what they should do.
And the Rabbi says, “Funny you should mention it... my son also has told me he has gone to Jerusalem and decided to become a Christian. Imagine my shame, me, a Rabbi, and his own son a Christian!”
And the Rabbi says, “We must fast for 3 days, and wear ashes on our heads, and pray to God for an answer.” And so the three men fast and wear ashes and they pray and pray and pray. And after 3 days the heavens open up, and a bright light shines down on them, and God Himself appears before them. And each one tells Him the terrible news, one after the other, about how his son has gone to Jerusalem and decided to become a Christian. What should they do?
