I don't think it's an unflattering picture. In fact he looks very regent and presidential.
It's not photo realistic but neither are most of Histories greatest portraits of Leaders and iconic figures. There's no two portraits of George Washington that looks the same. But you get the idea, that if you could see the real George Washington, you would know it's him from the picture.
