In California, I presented re-verified official birth record from the State of Florida, 1040 tax return, and property tax statement. However, there are a few variables in the requirements.

The hoops you need to jump through for a real ID are not insurmountable but are arduous nonetheless.

I just want to be left alone. I don't want everyone from hotels to liquor stores to know where I live. But for a real id, you need to provide a physical address, complete with two forms or proof. Untill now, I've used my PO box.
