In spite of my travel lethargy and reluctance, I have been to a few of these. A couple of years ago when I went with my friend to Maui, we did the 'Road to Hana'. The kid driving the van was a crazy Swiss dude smoking the ubiquitous hand rolled cigs. The mild half of the ride up through bamboo forests was OK. Then, he stopped so everybody who wanted could tank up on beers. The second half down to the high Maui plateaus was the most terrifying, heart thumping, insane vehicle ride I have ever been on. He went mad driving around corners on bumpy, lumpy gravel roads overlooking high sheer cliffs staring down at lava rocks and angry ocean. We actually got airborne on some of the hills and dips. Don't do this unless you have nerves of steel.
