Do you live in NYC or go there regularly? It's not as bad as the papers make it sound. Staying safe is part common sense, part awareness. Don't have your face glued to the phone. Keep in well lit high traffic areas. Don't walk around hammered at 3 a.m. unless you are in a large group. If a street looks seedy,bl change blocks. In the touristy areas there are cops on every corner. The chances of something bad happening are low if you pay attention to your surroundings and mind your own business.

It's not so bad until it happens to you. I remember reading accounts of people leaving SF. One guy said he kept hanging on, but got mugged with violence resulting in a permanently damaged eye, and he said he of course wished he had left sooner. I don't think it's such a great idea to cruise on the notion that somehow one is exempt if one is merely careful.

Woman in my hood in Santa Cruz was viciously beaten into unconsciousness by muggers. She wound up officially blind, but years later managed to get some vision back with surgeries. She has no recollection of the mugging incident, and has recovered mostly from some brain damage.

I lived in Staten Island until the second half of high school.
Later a family member had an apartment in Manhattan which I visited.
I had a hiatus of several decades and visited in 2009; it was much nicer.

Huh??? Meanwhile stores in once middle class neighborhoods have to lock up their merchandise or just close down completely. Someone tried to break into my house just a few weeks ago, which has never happened before in my several decades of living in NYC. Addicts are still strung out in almost all of those tourist areas, despite the cops. There was even a shooting in GUNFREEZONE Times Square not long ago too. What about Midtown from 60th to 50th streets? All those "migrants" literally just hanging out, drinking 40s were never to be found just four years ago. Plenty of subway stations now have MTA workers devoted to just standing by the emergency exits to prevent crazy people from getting in that way, which we should say is a good thing, but it comes at the price of higher fares.

What are the papers you're reading saying? Mine say crime is on the rise. The fact that you can give all of that advice about basically not going outside unless you're going to very specific safe places while saying "it's not THAT bad" is absolutely mind boggling.
