That ability was removed just prior to the 2016 election because Clinton wasn't doing that well, and there were plenty of people willing to point out what a blood soaked monster Hillary Clinton was. There were articles all over the place claiming getting rid of comments was a good thing because people were so "toxic" on them, and those poor reporters being harassed - well, they were harassed for lying and promoting propaganda.
I remember this well, because it was the last time I bothered to read articles in "mainstream press". The commenting sections never returned.
