"California Should Be Embarrassed" - State Passes Law Banning Trump From Ballot Unless Tax Returns Released

I predicted when this bill passed California's assembly, Newsom would sign it and now he has:

On Tuesday, Calif. Gov. Gavin Newsom signed a bill requiring President Trump to either release his tax returns or he won't appear on the ballot in the state.

Newsom argued that, as the largest economic engine within the US, California has a "responsibility" to demand this additional information (for the record: the Constitution doesn't say anything about candidates releasing tax returns - though the federal income tax didn't exist back on).

"As one of the largest economies in the world and home to one in nine Americans eligible to vote, California has a special responsibility to require this information of presidential and gubernatorial candidates," Newsom said.

"These are extraordinary times and states have a legal and moral duty to do everything in their power to ensure leaders seeking the highest offices meet minimal standards, and to restore public confidence. The disclosure required by this bill will shed light on conflicts of interest, self-dealing, or influence from domestic and foreign business interest."

A Trump campaign spokesman called the new law "unconstitutional," and insisted that there was a good reason why California's last governor, Jerry Brown, refused to sign the legislation.

In a statement, Trump campaign spokesman Tim Murtaugh called the move "unconstitutional."

"There are very good reasons why the very liberal Gov. Jerry Brown vetoed this bill two years ago - it's unconstitutional and it opens up the possibility for states to load up more requirements on candidates in future elections. What's next, five years of health records?" he said.

Murtaugh said states cannot add requirements to presidential candidates' qualifications for running.

"The Constitution is clear on the qualifications for someone to serve as president and states cannot add additional requirements on their own," he said. "The bill also violates the 1st Amendment right of association since California can't tell political parties which candidates their members can or cannot vote for in a primary election."

As Breitbart reports, this legislation will certainly be challenged in the courts and be struck down. However, the news outlet added, this is a win for Newsom as it will bring him national attention and embolden other states to do likewise.

Awesome win win for Trump dems are such stupid fucks. California should have its ballots trashed and not counted or now Trump has an even bigger excuse for not wining popular vote and why we need electoral college. It will be struck down and CA liberals look even more crazy to the rest of the country.

I think the last time California was embarrassed was 1932. Since then, it has been pure audacious flaunt. That has now morphed into routine, idiotic audacious flaunt.

Generalissimo Gavin of the Banana Republic of California.

Could this invalidate the entire CA election results for being unconstitutional and exclude it from being counted along with other states?

That'll get shot down in federal court. Net result... I, as a California taxpayer, will pay for California lawyers to fight with federal lawyers, which I'll also pay for. Well, at least some California politicians can virtue-signal! Thanks California!

If it were not the tax returns, they would have found another excuse to try and thwart the actual election of a President they do not want.

Why?

Well, try this on for size:
"federal law keeps tax returns confidential, and California cannot force a candidate to waive his or her rights under that law"

Honestly, I think it would help Trump in the re-election if California won and was able to exclude him from the ballot. Trump is surely not going to win California, so it won't hurt him directly. Indirectly, it might gin up additional support in other states that would vote for Trump just to spite California.

California has had it clear in the most arrogant and direct manner that it does not feel constrained to follow Federal Law AT ALL. Only the rainbow-hair-with-secretary-glasses Ninth Circuit if it happens to agree with them already.

I just re-registered to vote in California as a Democrat instead of a Republican.
It’s the only rational choice left to me, since it only matters for Presidential primaries, and I won’t be able to vote Trump on the primary thanks to rigged Democrat legislation.
I would encourage every other California Republican to re-register as a Democrat also, so you can express your feelings about the Democrat candidates. Maybe we can all decide to vote for the perfect spoiler candidate and really mess up California’s primary process!
Anyone else all in?
