Well my neighbor shot a bad ass badger in between out properties with his deer rifle last week ;) Lots of people go into the foothills and find a spot. There are a few back rds near unpopulated foothills that we see people sighting their rifles and target practicing all the time, most everyday near my direction of the valley Sand Hollow Rd. .and Little Freeze Out Rd

Got keys, hour after moving in neighbors came by and brought us cookies and helped me unload small trailer with piano. So many things are different. Freeway speed limit is 80! Way less nanny laws. Kids can start driving at 14.5yo.

The wife and have been looking at Boise, Sandpoint and Coeur D'Alene. We wanted easy access to the outdoors for hiking, and skiing would be a plus as well. It's all relative, but IMHO, these areas have already been discovered. From a bang for the buck perspective for a nice home on a good piece of land, you are going to have to move farther out in the periphery, which isn't necessariy a bad thing. But living centrally in these areas, you are not going to find increadible prices any more. Too many relocated Californians. And central Boise is a lot of early 1900 homes that flippers have dressed up and now expect insane prices for. I suppose if you are handy, you can buy a 1920's Craftsman and fix up yourself.

Bend, OR also has already been discovered. Too late. We are looking at other mountain locales, but so are other folks who have cashed out or are cashing out from the insanely priced RE and liberal policy destroyed areas. From a pricing perspective, it is a matter of getting in on the upward slope and not the peak.

I don't look at housing up there, but these areas are awesome. I'd buy there for sure. Had a delayed flight and SW lost my god damn snowboard (not really their fault, ran to the connecting flight in Vegas just to make it) so didn't get to snowboard up in Sandpoint. Forget the resort name. Was gonna do a rental, but said fuck it. Did drive up there and it looked nice.

You also have some great places to go with relatively short drive. Glacier NP. Yellowstone NP is ~7 hours. Fuck tons of state and national forests. Winters can suck, but never understood why it's not more popular. First time I drove through was when I was 18 and it hasn't changed a ton from what I recall. If you can deal with winter those would be my go to places.

Effing COLD in Winter. And Bleak. Can be pretty hot in summer too.

Is that a bad thing though? Cold is a character builder. Fun activities to do in the cold too. Went ice fishing with my buddies for the first time in Montana this last winter. With the equipment out there now, it's a blast. You're not cold at all. It's an adventure. Drink some beers and catch some fish. I personally like the change of seasons, just wish there were closer big mountains in IL for snowboarding.

My biggest issue is sun. Getting dark at 4:30pm local is shitty. Messes with me. I can handle the cold though.

Yeah. That's one of the draws of living in Northern California. All winter long, we can go to the Sierras for that when we want to, and stay home when we don't want to.

Sandpoint and Coeur D'Alene are a bit farhter north than Boise. The average winter month lows (Dec-Feb) farther north are in the low 20's, highs in the 30's. Average high summer temps (Jun-Aug) are 70's to low '80's, and lows in the upper 40's. Average annual snowfall: 59 inches.

I get the appeal of CA for sure. You're a short drive to some great skiing/boarding but live in a temperate climate at home. Wife and I have looked at relocating out there multiple times now. It just doesn't make sense to do it for weather and activities. You sleep 6-8 hours a day. Work another 8-10. By the time you deal with traffic, fires, taxes, high cost of living, regulations, etc it makes little to zero sense to live in CA.

Idaho is very appealing. Utah isn't bad, but I can't stand their Mormon booze laws. Montana is okay, but CA commies are taking over the larger cities/towns. Washington and Oregon are in the same boat as CA. Beautiful but managed like horse shit. I'd do parts of ID, AZ, CO and WY if I ever moved west. Maybe MT if we could work remotely and get some land 40-60 minutes from a bigger town.

So far looks like schools are much better in ID at least where I’m at. My two older sons really like the classes much more, my oldest went on about how much better and more hands on everything is. His art class has way better equipment, and he is doing a lot of lab work in science class instead of dumb work sheets. Wife told me all the kids seem much kinder and respectful of adults. My oldest son made a friend day one and kid called my wife Mam. Kid came up to my youngest in class and told him out of the blue if he needs anything or any help to ask, my wife was blown away. She is having a hard time and use to being on the defensive so much dealing with schools in CA she doesn’t know what to do in ID.
School is full time for younger grades and the rest are slowly opening up full time. They seem to also get a lot less homework so far. Oldest is looking forward to getting his learners permit to drive at 14 1/2yo.

This is an outrage. ID needs Illiterate Kommie entrenched, overpaid, over-tenured teacher's union apparatchiks to correct this situation where children receive education.

Il update here since I'm going on 5yrs and someone was asking in another thread about ID.

Extremely low crime, I would feel safe walking anywhere. People leave pallets of stuff out for construction and nobody is guarding anything. Kids dont lock bikes at school. Hardly any homeless.

Schools are less commie here. Only negative is my youngest does have an IEP and I think it's a bit worse for him than at our old school but then again we were in an extreamly good school district in CA. Aside from that if your in a city here in a good area it's like being in an expensive white enclave in CA. Kids are more respectful here.

Jobs, Wife and I make about 40% more here doubt that's the norm though. There are way more jobs for teens it hasn't been taken over by illegals. My oldest son has worked since he turned 16 and runs a his own hamburger stand at events in the summer. His friends all have part time jobs even the 14yo next door has a flourishing lawn business.

I have been to every hospital in idaho and a ton of small towns everyone is very kind I've had people randomly ask if I wanted sandwiches been invited to Christmas parties while I was traveling around for work visiting customers.

I've taken my kids camping all over the place and never feel threatened by anyone like in CA. I guess you wouldn't live long around here if you were a thug or methhead in the woods.

So far I still think it's like going back 70s-80s. Not overrun by illegals, foreigners, or ghetto blacks.

They do have winter here although it's not to rough in the treasure valley, must of my herb garden survives it including my rosemary. Only get about 3-15 of snow since I've been here.

I've heard about such memes but never heard anyone tell me first hand that they experienced it.

I moved to Idaho 5yrs ago but 50 min from Boise in farm land. Living in crowded Boise was not even considered we only go thru there because the airport. Boise city government has welcomed the weirdos that have gender issues. Biden shipped in migrants from Africa mothers and children wearing bright colors totally out of place staying in motels who knows where they are now.

They won't say it to your face. Only behind the back. This is prevalent in Bozeman, MT. They'll be nice but they quietly despise Californians or any outsiders if they've been there long enough as residents.

As a tourist out there the locals are more open to talking about it. They know I'm there just to visit and not change things. Californians are despised in Bozeman. I'm sure it's the same in Boise, it's just a Californian transplant wouldn't notice because the locals are nice to your face and will talk shit about you behind your back.

it happens. more in small towns and rural areas. in cities it’s more muted, plus there’s a lot of people in the cities from CA, WA, FL.

And yes a lot of people say it privately too, more than publicly.

Spent the night in Boise on a road trip a couple of weeks ago. No openly drugged out people like we witnessed in Spokane Washington. I asked our server at a nice little restaurant why, and he replied, "The police wouldn't allow it."

Boise seemed like a nice city in our short stay. Really nice park along the river downtown.

We mostly camped out during our 2,300 mile trip, but we spent the night in motels in Spokane, Missoula, and Boise. I would like to explore all three a little more. Missoula seemed the friendliest while Spokane seemed the most interesting. Didn't stay long enough in any of the three to know for sure.

My father was raised in Spokane, my Scandinavian grandparents lived and died there.

I hadn't been back since a kid, but drove through on our trip a couple of years ago. Spokane is artsy, university type town with good music it appears. Gonzaga is one of the Jesuit universities in the country there. They might account for the third world immigrant relocations in the areas. You might expect the hip university character to have more gays, artsies and druggies who all seem to cluster to the same vibes.

Came very close to buying a house in Avimor. Last minute disclosures by the seller’s realtor sent us packing. We wound up buying a condo in downtown Greenville, SC, and really like it. Yeah, cookie cutter suburbia is alive and well in Eagle, Meridian, Avimor. But people want it, apparently. The residents of Avimor seemed to be rather standoffish, couldn’t quite figure out why. Downtown Boise was filled with tatted hipsters, I am guessing work-from-anywhere transplants. Locals are getting priced out of many areas. But, the state is mostly white, a very good thing.

That person was a rich boomer bitch that had moved here in the early 2000s from Pacific Palisades and she complained about the state being ran by county pumpkin. As far as negative people in general both times boomers bitches from CA one was a mask nazi in 2021 the other I watched belittle a teller in the bank and I'm pretty sure she was from CA because of her voice. All three were around 70.

My first job here i traveled all over idaho I have been to so many small towns and everyone has been really cool. I wouldn't worry about being from CA as long as your not an asshole.

You reminded me of when we staged our summer Banff trip from Spokane. We got a cheap Southwest flight from SJ to Spokane and made a long drive towards Coeur d'Alene then up the spine of the Idaho panhandle towards Banff. A whole lot cheaper than flying to Calgary from SF.

Man alive that part of Idaho was spectacularly beautiful. I'd have liked to explore the area but we didn't have much time and the trip was to spend time with some friends vacationing in Banff.

Before Southwest had a route to Bozeman, Spokane was my launching point to get to Missoula and Bozeman. I despise cities, but I kind of liked Spokane. If you have the coordination and dexterity the scooters are awesome to get around with it being a small city.

Missoula is a college town. Cool little downtown. Outside of town is Bonner, MT and the Kettlehouse. Good music venue. Miniature Red Rocks Montana style. Also best big town to launch from to hit Glacier NP.

Bozeman is still my favorite out there. My buddies host me and might have to work. I grab a 12 pack and just explore on my own. Yes beer. Yes drinking and driving. I find places even they didn't know about that they now go to. I know it will offend people, but I'll sips beers and not see a car for hours. Absolute peace. The best place in America and I've been to all lower 48.
