The VP candidate should be competent and solid, but stay in the background and quietly handle the stuff the president might miss or not want to handle. And then there's Biden: He's picking a running mate even less exciting than his own non-exciting status 12 years ago when VP; and now he is 12-years-older even less exciting than the non-exciting before.
He could could pick RBG! Or maybe a doormat! More likely, he'll have to pick someone that will run circles around him and then show for all the world just how unfit Biden is. That's why I have been gambling that Biden won't announce a running mate until the last possible moment before the convention.
I also think there's a good chance Biden will pick a running mate going into the convention, step down right after the convention, and then designate his running-mate as the presidential contender.

The Democrat’s presumptive nominee Joe Biden will name his running mate as early as next week, and Congressional Black Caucus chair Rep. Karen Bass (D-CA) is reportedly a top contender for job.
The California Democrat has emerged as the favorite pick of former Sen. Chris Dodd, who serves on Biden’s vice presidential search committee. According a source who spoke with Politico, Dodd has urged Biden to choose Bass because “she’s a loyal No. 2. And that’s what Biden really wants.”
On the surface, Bass’s background as a former medical professional and South Los Angeles community organizer make her an attractive candidate to serve at a time when public health and racial inequality are on the top of voters’ minds.
