A recall petition to oust California governor Gavin Newsom has passed 1.2 million signatures amid growing frustration over his handling of the coronavirus pandemic and the devastating impact restrictions have had on the state's economy. Only 300,000 more signatures are needed by March 17 to take the issue to voters in a ballot. The recall effort gained traction after the first-term Democrat was pictured flouting his own Covid-19 rules by dining at a Michelin star restaurant without a mask - while telling state residents to spurn social gatherings and stay home.
Who will audit these signatures? Will the whole set be thrown out by a judge as soon as one questionable entry is found?

OAKLAND — California Democrats are suddenly waking up to a nightmarish reality that in their solidly blue state, a small but determined band of GOP activists may soon set off a recall that puts Gov. Gavin Newsom’s future in doubt.Alarmed party leaders, facing the threat of a chaotic and expensive election by the end of this year, have begun to issue “all hands on deck” calls. But it may already be too late to convince the disorderly Democratic ranks to put aside their political differences — and in some cases, ambitions — and stand in unity with their embattled governor.
