Here's what you don't get it, if one didn't grow up in the Boston-to-DC or SF-to-LA corridors, chances are, the average American will only see the 'Indian-American' as portrayed by Apu, on national television.

Since I grew up in the People's Republic of Cambridge MA, prior the age of 9, I'd known Indian, Nepalese, Haitian, Jamaican, Vietnamese, Cambodian, ex-Soviets, and countless other sub-nationalities within a few square miles from my home.

I never had a problem with Apu, but most of the woke millennials (people born in the 90s) are likely to be butt hurt about this.

The only thing I would say is that Indians are much more likely in my personal experience, known for this caricature than for being a big chunk of Silicon Valley.

For most part outside of places like the Bay Area Indians and asians are invisible and this is often true

At Emory university, Jewish people are 30-40% of the student body but make up 70% of the Greek system; Indians and asians are close to 20% of the student body and make up less than 5% of the Greek system and are pigeonholed into meeting with people of the same race.

Even in medicine, if Indians are 10% of the medical workforce while making up 1% of the population, it is not spread evenly amongst all areas of medicine; it is mostly concentrated in internal medicine and subspecialties.

If you see Indians who are in the most competitive fields in medicine, they usually worked fairly hard but have a doctor patent or in many cases, both parents are doctors.

In order to not be invisible at elite institutions, Indians not only have to be the highest scorers but they have to be socially adept to hang out and be politically able with people who don’t look like them.

My experience is that people who grow up in places like
Cupertino tend to be insular vs someone indian or Asian coming from Los Gatos.

On the issue of violence against asians.

Law enforcement in California is stretched thin. I hear about break ins into homes in California cities more frequently when I lived there over 10 years ago than I ever did in NJ.

Hispanics and to lesser extent (in California) blacks target hikes of Indians because many are stupid enough to keep large quantities of gold at home.

This isn’t new by any stretch. Assaults against asians in the subways is not in any way new.

Not sure if it is increased dramatically since covid but what I did notice is that with many people vacating New York City during the pandemic I am Seeing a lot of degenerates roaming streets in Manhattan.

Incidentally the crime rate has soared in nyc to levels they haven’t been seen pre-Giuliani.

I came from a remote place and so, most people didn’t know the difference between an Indian and a middle easterner. Many in New Mexico can’t tell the difference between a Sikh and a muslim. They are both seen as ‘ragheads’ cut from the same cloth and all of us are seen as ‘sand niggers’ or ‘camel jockeys’.

But for most part they see seen as stealers of jobs.
