#neweuropeanwarpossible Diplomatic talks between the US and Russia failed. Russian officials described them as "a write-off." What we have next is something that Elena describes as "a two-front war." We could see Russian combat troops fighting in both Ukraine and Finland.
What does this mean for you? Will you see Russian nuclear warheads raining down on Europe, the US, etc? Let us get some perspective here. Russia is a giant landmass that covers 7 time zones. It has a population of 140 million people that is declining due to massive alcoholism, Covid-19, and AIDS. (Russia now imports farmers from India and gives them farmland to work.)
Let us compare Russia to the greater New York City metropolitan area. New York City has roughly the same gross domestic product as Russia. The New York City greater metropolitan area contains 8% of the US industrial capacity. This is equal to the total industrial capacity of Russia.
What I have seen with my own eyes is that small mistakes and misunderstandings can accumulate until they become a disaster. This whole situation with Russia is very dangerous because of the high probability of a miscalculation or mistake leading to a large-scale armed conflict.
What you will see is gasoline and natural gas prices go much higher. The US, Canada, Brasil, Argentina, etc. have good local supplies of oil and gas. Europe is not in that position with the exception of, perhaps, Norway. Natural gas not only heats apartments and homes but is also a building block in the production of fertilizer that is vital for farmers to grow crops. Countries with natural gas in the ground will be able to buy gas at some price (if local people can afford it.) Europe could see a situation where there is little natural gas available.
Financial markets will tumble in a panic over the conflict. Your retirement investments will be hurt. Even China and Japan, and India will be hit hard. Economies around the world will slip into recession.
The Russian people will suffer greatly as crippling sanctions kick in. They will also see tens of thousands of their sons, brothers, husbands, sisters, wives, etc. dying on very lethal battlefields. Vladimir Putin will be faced with massive protests and civil unrest that could topple his regime. Think about what happens when a wild and violent animal finds itself cornered. I will leave all of you to reflect on this.

There will be a diplomatic solution and this will be a tempest in a teapot. Place your bets.

Correct. There will be no invasion.

Fact is that people living in Russia, whether life is glorious or not there, have quite a lot of freedom as long as they don't become vocal political opponents

Umm, you may want to say that sentence out loud -"have quite a lot of freedom as long as they don't become vocal political opponents."

Like in Canada, Australia, NZ, and partially the US if you work in specific sectors. Your life will be destroyed at a minimum, or you go into internment camps or jail if you don't submit to the jab/ruling party. I don't recall Russia having mandatory jabs. We may have to invade Canada which is seizing money from US citizens, and all the other countries for being dictatorships. Ok at least they're not trying to expand their territory yet

No doubt. I was not commenting on relative freedoms between countries, I was pointing out the wording - "have quite a lot of freedom as long as they don't become vocal political opponents." That is like saying "You have freedom until you try and use it."

Agreed. I think what many overlook though is that many families just want to live their lives and are otherwise very apolitical. Say you lived in Iraq or Syria you may have been Christian or Muslim and all you cared is having enough money to feed and house your family and practicing your religion and the work you like. Those countries provided that despite their leaders being dictators (but they were always cracking down on religious extremists on both sides and keep it peaceful, and of course the kurds weren't as lucky but they aren't lucky in Turkey as well). Relative freedom for womyn in Iraq under Saddam was very high compared to neighboring countries. Christians and Muslims have been living mostly peacefully under Assad, etc. etc. So I think it's totally plausible that for prolonged periods of time a people may not care that they are living under a dictatorship or monarchy as long as the feel they have enough to live a happy life. Not saying life in Russia is great, but maybe it improved economically a bit over the past years and many people do vote for Putin despite having shown (ruthless) dictatorial traits for many. Plus even if you discount for the cheating there are probably 40% in the US who love to live under a leftoid iron-fist dictatorship where being unjabbed or misgendering is illegal and can land you in prison or ruin your life. Luckily despite all the corruption the US has a pretty good system of checks and balances that the left is currently trying to dismantle in order to go full dictatorship. But our 2020 election surely wasn't any better than those in current dictatorships.

In the USA, we have to struggle for even basic freedoms of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. All of those have recently been denied or usurped by government policy. Life… well they denied us early treatment and therapeutics for Covid and insisted on hospital treatments that killed people instead of making them well. And they created and pushed this clot shot that killed many more and may wind up killing most of the million who got the injection. When your own government is actively trying to PUSH your murder and the murder of your families and children, things are PRETTY FUCKING BAD!

Liberty? We haven’t been free to even show our faces in many states and cities without a dirty face diaper. We haven’t been free to move about, to go to church, to the movies, to visit loved ones in the hospital, or prison. We couldn’t gather for a family reunion without incurring the wrath of public officials or have and attend funerals for our loved ones. We have been forced to close our businesses and our workplaces and our schools. Our kids have been denied an education. We have been denied the basic liberty to do basic things necessary for life.

Pursuit of happiness has been forbidden unless your idea of happiness comes from ratting out your neighbors and living like an agoraphobic troll.

The USA has gone from freedom to totalitarian nightmare.

Don’t lecture me on how Russia is so fucking bad when my own government keeps trying to kill us all.

JOHN MEARSHEIMER: I am worried about escalation. In my opinion, it can take two forms. The one that scared me the most was one where the Russians were losing. Let's say that the American plan to bring the Russians to their knees was working. Yeah, let's assume it worked out. I believe the Russians would have used nuclear weapons. Or to put it in more qualified terms, it's highly likely that the Russians would have used nuclear weapons.
